“This is not a drill. It is a red alert.”Those are the words of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk as El Obeid faces the threat of another mass atrocity. The UN is warning that the signs are “clear and unmistakable”: another human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan.We’ve heard these warnings before. We saw what happened in Darfur in 2003. We saw what happened in El Fasher (2023), coined “the most accurately predicted mass atrocity in human history” - where it is estimated that civilians casualties of 60,000 to a quarter million people were “killed by the RSF, died, been displaced or persist in hiding” in just a few weeks. (Yale Humanitarian Research Lab)The question is whether governments will act in time to prevent a civilian massacre in El Obeid now. People in Canada and across the globe demand accountability: an end to the flow of weapons and material support from the UAE to the genocidal RSF. This starts by ending Canada’s liberal government collaboration with the UAE, a hub that is fueling this horrific ongoing Darfur genocide. Canadian politicians cannot say they have not been warned. There are over 500,000 residents and thousands of internally displaced people living in and around El Obeid. Call your MP TODAY - Demand a statement - Demand action. 🚨 ALL EYES ON EL OBEID! 🚨The genocidal RSF militia is closing in on the Sudanese city of El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan, and intensifying their deadly drone attacks on the civilian population.The UAE-backed militia has besieged El Obeid on three sides and is concentrating their troops around key positions outside the city, indicating a full-scale ground invasion is imminent.Over half a million people are trapped in El Obeid, including more than 100,000 people who fled there for safety. RSF drone strikes have taken out the city’s main power plant and a number of fuel stations, triggering unprecedented shortages of fuel and water.For more than three years, Canada has watched the genocidal RSF repeatedly besiege and massacre people in cities and villages across Sudan, while refusing to name or sanction the regime arming them: the United Arab Emirates.The Canadian government shamefully continues to strengthen its ties with the UAE, deepening Canadian complicity in the RSF’s mass atrocities while signing statements urging the militia to stop.This cannot continue.We demand Canada:➡️ NAME THE UAE!➡️ SANCTION THE UAE!➡️ IMPOSE AN ARMS EMBARGO ON THE UAE NOW! by @mtl4sudan

CBC has once again uncovered evidence of Canadian-made weapons in prohibited conflict zones, including Sudan, Yemen and Libya. In one video from 2024, a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighter in Sudan is seen using a Canadian-made Sterling Cross rifle to abuse detainees.Asked about the findings at the UofT event last Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand acknowledged there appeared to be violations of Canada’s arms export permitting process and said any contraventions should be investigated by the RCMP.But this isn’t just about one company. Experts interviewed by CBC point to the UAE as a key hub through which weapons are diverted to armed groups in embargoed conflict zones. Despite repeated evidence of diversion, Canada continues approving arms exports to the UAE and has refused to impose an arms embargo on the UAE or require stronger safeguards against re-export.Last year, CBC submitted nine documented cases involving Sterling Cross rifles in RSF hands to Global Affairs Canada. The RSF used Sterling Cross rifles during the active genocide of El Fasher, in which tens of thousands of ethnic Sudanse were massacred after the city was besieged for 18 months. After the fall of El Fasher in October 2025, MP Heather McPherson urged the government to use Canada’s diplomatic and trade relationship with the UAE to stop the flow of weapons into these wars.
