Yesterday to launch the New York Climate Week festivities we hosted an all-afternoon briefing of our latest takes on the energy transition.

I got to present the conclusions of the report I've been writing with my team for months. In it we lay out how the energy transition impacts companies' cashflows.
After so many months of hard work it felt a bit like our own release party.

I'll share more about the key conclusions of the report soon.

Summer by @layla_khanfar
So glad it is over. Used to love it....but that heat man. This picture makes it look nice and airy. Almost like we were enjoying it.
How wonderful is photography.

Went to the Edhec climate risk conference yesterday, as part of the London Climate Action Week.
Key takeaways:
- Their work on putting probability on climate scenarios was truly interesting. I learned a lot, in particular that the most probable scenarios are the ones we want least to happen. And also that in all scenarios, we are at the coldest year of the upcoming years.
- Adaptation and resilience are the key themes of the coming years. Some have been saying it for years, and we know it is again too late, but we should take whatever we can to salvage what can be. Their work is interesting on showing that building adaptation measures on infrastructures increase the value of said infrastructures and therefore the return for investors. Proving this (short to medium term) financial benefit has been until now the key barrier for private investment into adaptation. And it cannot only rely on public funding.
- There was a big highlight on physical risks, their heterogeneous nature and won't affect all geographies and sectors in the same manner.

The key challenge of the climate crisis is the conflicting timelines: we need to act and invest now to protect ourselves in the future. The problem is that the capitalistic system as well as the current political system reward short-term actions and consequences. We always invest too late, when we can start feeling the impacts. And we might gain a couple of percentage points of increase of GDP thanks to fossil fuel revenues in the short term, but we will pay it back in damages a couple of decades later, if not earlier.

Writing all of this in the blasting heat makes it so much worse. And I wish I could say we are hopeful. That recycling and using a disposable water bottle will help. But it won't. We need a system change. We need better community support. We need different political and economical incentives.

Yes, some have power in how their spend their money. Some have power in choosing which industries they want to support the growth of. Or who they want to work for. But not everyone has this power. However almost all of us can vote. And that is thegreatest way we can support systemic changes in democracy. taken in One Birdcage Walk by @maiamesanger

After the usual ceremonial NYC headshot every time I go, I had to start this in Singapore. This country has so many photobooth shops! Like, actual stores filled with booths.

So I entered the first booth in the shop, only to realise that it had a fish tank for you to take pictures wish fishes in the foreground. Wild!
Needless to say, quite questionable from an animal respect standpoint.... I am sorry.

Anyway, here are the pictures. More to come in the coming days!

On Friday I gave my first guest lecture at UCL for two masters as part of their climate finance module. The topic was sustainable finance policy. A very broad one! So I gave them an overview of why we need them despite the rollbacks on ESG and sustainable finance in some markets. Gave them an overview of the key sustainable finance policies. And finally I tried to explain why some policymakers are backpedalling on their policy regimes. The hour and a half went super fast!

I loved the experience of going back to the basics, explaining all the concepts from scratch. The class had loads of questions and challenged some of the things the market takes for granted, which I loved. I love inquisitive students! (I wonder why... maybe they remind me of someone I know really well!)
Most of them were really keen and listening, a miracle as I was the last thing standing between them and their weekend!

It was quite a memorable way to enter my 32nd year on this planet. And even more special to do it with my sister @iamclairedays in the room. A throwback to 15 years ago, when we met during our first year of uni.
(She's still the best at taking notes)

School picture, Bloomberg style.

Does this mean I am legit now? An adult even?

(Yes, St Paul is real in the background. No it is not a fake background. No, I am not in front of some old Roman ruins. The Bloomberg building is actually built on top of Roman ruins and overlooks St Paul..... Ouais we're braggy)

Panel went well.
Never thought I would have to moderate a discussion on how financial markets will move forward after this first wave of sustainable finance policy rollbacks. At least not so soon.... Yet, to date, 6 markets have either delayed, paused or altogether rescinded some of their sustainable finance policies. Wild.

Embedding climate performance (using a very wide concept on purpose) and risk of companies into financial analysis will become much more complicated as a result. This could both impact investment in the energy transition but also lead banks and investors to underestimate their exposure to such risk.

My panellists were very pragmatic and realistic about the trend but rather optimistic: yes, we are going through a hard patch, but sustainability professionals are used to having very little data to do their analysis. The three of them had a long enough experience in this field to know that.

The fact that the EU itself, which boasted the most ambitious policy agenda until now, is walking back on its existing rules is also sending the wrong signal to the market and create unnecessary uncertainties. But we all acknowledged the need to take a step back and assess the efficiency and usefulness of all the regulations that had been pushed out over the past decade (I am being generous, the past 5 years).

Bref, we had so much to talk about. And my panellists had a lot to say, which is always a blast for a moderator. I'll share the video soon for those who care (on this social media, not many do but you never know. I've seen so many activists on the Gram talking about this exact same topic recently.... Just in a much less nuanced and much more clickbait-y manner).

Much love,

Maia

(Thank you @hannahgodley for the haircut that dates back from July and still keeps on giving despite the very little care I give to it. You're a star)

Collection of few bits and bobs of memories from my first Gennetines as I head back to my second home.
I've started dancing balfolks (or as we call them in Provence "baletis") when I was 15. They allowed me to grow into a warm community, and discover new ways to connect with people and our bodies. (Thank you mom, @mesanger.m for dropping me at my first festival in the woods)

Only @laetitiacartonfilm was able to really capture the atmosphere of balfolks in her beautiful movie Le Grand Bal. I did not seek to capture anything (it is impossible for us common mortals, and also you are often too busy dancing) but to record some memories to look back at, as I wait until I can be back next year.

To this wonderful week in this bubble. To the wonderful people I have met. To the incredible bands I've danced to (coucou @ciacboum in the first slide and @petitpiment_bal that I did not even try to record), putain you fucking rock, you made me live my favourite moments. To the incredible workshops. To my Ti, @imanou_tina, for bringing me along and sharing this time with me. ❤️

I cannot wait for next year already.

I moved into my house a year ago. This home is a labour of love, with many hours of DIY from me and with the help of my dear parents (love you @mesanger.m ). A year later, a lot has changed.
Some of my friends told me to open a renovation account, but I can't be f.cked to do so. Also, I don't feel like sharing picture and videos of my personal space. It is too intimate.

But these pictures of my dear @layla_khanfar when she was cat-sitting capture rather well the warmth and peace I find at home. (And how much I love a mustard colour)

The '25 edition of the routine NYC museum photobooth pic. This time in the Brooklyn museum because the Whitney removed theirs.

Funny to see one aging.

Thank you @jesuistree for giving me the best time in NYC despite all my ranting.

"Is ESG at a breaking point?"
This is the soft version of the question we are getting from a lot of clients for the past few months. We attempted to answer it with @jameson.mclennan yesterday on the main stage of the BNEF summit.

Basically we can recap it as follows: first, ESG has never been clearly defined and its an acronym of three adjectives (environmental, social and governance) that in itself means close to nothing* . It had become a "catch-all" term for marketing brochures.

We think that the legacy of the anti-ESG backlash will be threefold:
- it is forcing more clarification from the market, leading financial institutions and firms to clearly state their strategy and what they are trying to achieve, instead of just waving the term around for any reason,
- the politicisation of the tern will lead to more greenhushing, organizaitons will be less vocal about their sustainability strategies but it does not mean they won't continue to happen,
- there will be an increasing necessity to prove the financial materiality (the fact that these factors do impact the returns of an organisation) of these factors to consider them.

So conclusion? ESG as a label might be dead but its essence will persist: corporations, banks and investors will continue to consider the non-financial factors that impact the financial performance of companies.

This is such a brief recap of a very very nuanced discussion so if you wanna discussion, reach out!

PS: I've never liked the term ESG in the first place. And during Jameson's interview I actually asked him to define "ESG". That was a trick question because to me as such it meant nothing.

*(a panellist from the previous panel even said it referred to "egg sausage and grits")
