Half way through painting this, I realised why this landscape felt so familiar.. it is a depiction of the place i see when I listen to music and sometimes when I am falling asleep.. maybe I am remembering, because in my heart, i feel like I was here before birth, and I am sure I’ll return here when I die, even just for a moment.. maybe this is collective consciousness?? I like the mystery of it all… I have done a painting similar about 4 years ago… this is the second one now. I find painting these scapes extremely therapeutic.. Lots of rumination on human existence and life. A friend showed me recently a photo of ‘the most accurate depiction of a single human cell’, and I was surprised at the resemblance between that and these portal paintings… much to ponder on… it’s all very exciting to me!

This was never intended to be seen. The night I made this, i was staring at this blank piece of paper, and just closed my eyes. I sat with a piece of charcoal in my hand, just breathing with my eyes closed. After a moment, I saw my childhood home. I felt like I was really there, standing at my front gate, coming home from a school day. I wondered to myself..

What if I tried to move forward and open up the gate?
I could use the charcoal as a guide to move myself around the memory?

So I put the charcoal on the paper, and moved it up the page. It was working! I was moving around, half in control, half inside of a memory. I opened up the squeaky front gate, walked up the stairs and opened the front door. Inside, I saw my mum in the kitchen, and my dog Sodapop at the back door. I put Soda’s lead on and took her for a walk.

I noticed what I was seeing was almost a birds-eye view of the memory.. I could see myself and soda walking from ‘above’ at times, and then my vision would switch into first person.

We walked to the other side of town, over the train tracks, past the community garden, looped around the oval and came back home again.
It was a highly emotional experience. I could feel the emotions I felt at that time of my life, in real time.
When I opened my eyes to see the scribbles from the charcoal, I realised that the patterns of the memory were an artwork in itself!! I decided to add a few details with my eyes open to accentuate certain parts, and wrote down a secret de-coded description of the memory in my diary. That night, I made 5 more drawings, most of them centred around my hometown and in the process, I uncovered memories that were deeply buried in my subconscious. It has been such an interesting and overwhelming experience and I definitely would like to explore this meditative practice more.

scribing sound onto paper - not the most perfect things ever, but very entertaining to draw these songs and scribble all the sounds out!! I did these in my sketchbook at the pub the other week. Might do some more tonight! :))
