What does it mean to face hatred – and to speak across it?

Join us for a powerful film evening exploring whether and how dialogue is possible in the context of racist violence and extremist ideologies:

CINEMATIC CONVERSATIONS ON VIOLENCE, RESPONSIBILITY, AND CHANGE

Sunday, May 31st
6-8 PM
Pilecki Institute
Pariser Platz 4A
10117 Berlin

🎬 Beyond the Divide (2025) by Imoje Aikhoje

🎬 That Boy (2025) by Toby Gorniak

Both films bring together protagonists affected by far-right violence and former perpetrators in deeply personal, confrontational encounters.

They open up urgent questions around responsibility, radicalization, and whether something like forgiveness can ever exist.

After the screenings, stay with us for a discussion with the filmmakers @maichal94 and @tobygorniakmbe to reflect on the stories behind the films and the role of dialogue in confronting racism.

The event is supported by The British Council.

Day Two. Berlin.

That evening, I found myself sitting on a panel at the Pilecki Institute alongside an incredible author, singer & activist and a film director flown in from the UK, whose film “Beyond The Divide” was screened alongside my documentary, “That Boy”.

And honestly…

Little Toby would never have believed this.

The Roma boy who grew up feeling invisible.

The Roma boy who was attacked and left in a coma at 11 years old.

The Roma boy who rarely saw people like himself reflected in spaces like these.

Yet there I was.

My story on the screen.

My voice on the panel.

Roma and Sinti young adults in the audience.

The British Council, NGOs and cultural organisations in the room.

Not watching from the sidelines.

Part of the conversation.

That’s what stayed with me.

Because representation isn’t just about being present.

It’s about being heard.

I’ve learned something over the years:

When one person walks through a door, it’s an achievement.

When they hold it open for others, it’s impact.

Last night felt like impact.

A powerful reminder that our stories belong in every room where the future is being discussed.

And when they’re finally heard, something shifts

How can dialogue become possible after racist violence? What happens when victims and former perpetrators meet face to face?
Join us for an evening of film and discussion exploring violence, responsibility, memory, and the possibility of change through two powerful documentaries:

Beyond the Divide (2025) by Imoje Aikhoje
That Boy (2025) by Toby Gorniak

Both films focus on deeply personal encounters between those affected by racist violence and former neo-Nazis, opening up difficult but necessary conversations about hatred, accountability, forgiveness, and transformation.

After the screenings, stay for a discussion with the filmmakers on the making of the films and the role of dialogue in confronting racism and far-right violence today.

Organised by the Critical Film & Image Hub and Evangelische Akademie zu Berlin
Co-organised by the Pilecki-Institute Berlin

This event is supported by the British Council.
