Hace 40 años @ironmaiden emprendió un rumbo del que no volvió, entró la música más progresiva y compleja, y logró uno de los trabajos más innovadores dentro de su discografía el apoteósico “Somewhere In Time”

40 AÑOS DE SOMEWHERE IN TIME

Un día como hoy, 29 de septiembre de 1986, Iron Maiden lanzaba su sexto álbum de estudio: Somewhere in Time, el esperado sucesor de la exitosa dupla Powerslave / Live After Death.

El disco marcó un hito tecnológico para la banda: fue el primer álbum de Iron Maiden en incorporar guitarras sintetizadas, un recurso que Dave Murray, Adrian Smith y Steve Harris utilizaron para explorar texturas más futuristas y atmosféricas, sin perder del todo la esencia del heavy metal que los caracterizaba.

La icónica portada, obra nuevamente de Derek Riggs, presentó a un Eddie completamente reinventado como cazador ciborg en una ciudad futurista repleta de guiños a la discografía de la banda, convirtiéndose en una de las ilustraciones más detalladas y celebradas de todo su catálogo.

Con “Wasted Years” y “Stranger in a Strange Land”, ambas compuestas por Adrian Smith, como sus sencillos más recordados, el disco también incluyó la extensa “Alexander the Great”, que narra la vida del conquistador macedonio en más de ocho minutos de duración.

Curiosamente, varias canciones de corte más acústico que Bruce Dickinson había propuesto para el álbum fueron descartadas por el resto de la banda, quedando fuera de la versión final del disco.

Certificado platino por la RIAA con más de un millón de copias vendidas solo en Estados Unidos, Somewhere in Time sigue siendo recordado como uno de los discos más atmosféricos y visualmente

🤘 40 YEARS OF SOMEWHERE IN TIME 🤘

On September 29, 1986, Iron Maiden released Somewhere in Time.

But my story with this album starts almost exactly a year later.

September 1987.

I was 11 years old and had just started 6ème in France, 6th Grade in the US. New school, new faces. None of us really knew anyone yet.

I’d just made a new friend and one lunchtime we walked up to the market above our school. There was a guy there selling T-shirts, and one of them stopped us dead.

It had the Somewhere in Time album cover on it.

We had absolutely no idea who Iron Maiden were.

But THAT ARTWORK. 🤯

We were completely blown away by it. My friend bought the shirt immediately.

I went home that evening and walked down to the local newsagent. I asked the guy behind the counter:

“Do you have anything about Iron Maiden?”

He handed me a copy of Hard Rock magazine.

Okay… so Iron Maiden was a band. 😂

I told my friend and the investigation began.

Eventually we found someone who had an Iron Maiden cassette he was willing to lend us:

LIVE AFTER DEATH.

We put it on.

WOW.

That was it.

I took my pocket money, went to the record store and bought two cassettes:

⚡ Somewhere in Time
⚡ Live After Death

And the rest is history.

39 years later, I’m still here.

Hundreds of albums. Countless concerts. Thousands of hours listening to music. And eventually BeatTheRiff itself.

All because two 11-year-old kids saw the Somewhere in Time artwork on a T-shirt at a market and wondered what the hell Iron Maiden was.

Somewhere in Time became the album that got me into music, and Iron Maiden became, and still is, the greatest band of all time to me.

And somehow, all these years later, this crazy journey even gave me something that 11-year-old kid with his cassettes could never have imagined:

a friend in Nicko McBrain. ❤️🥁

Funny how one tiny moment can change the course of your life.

Mine started with Somewhere in Time.

Happy 40th anniversary to the album that started it all. 💙💛
