I’ve been thinking about my family…Tokyo…Japan…or is it just a dream? I miss my family, my grandparents especially, SO VERY MUCH! There hasn’t been a day…a moment…in my life, since I had to leave, that I haven’t thought about them. I’ve been longing for the day that I will finally see my family and experience Japan again! I still remember them…do they remember me? Do they miss me? Do they love me as much as I do them?

Look who just became a college graduate! There are no words to say how incredibly proud I am to be your mama, of who you are, what you have accomplished thus far and will continue to achieve in your future. When Gerry and I were kids and living in Canada, his best friend was Paul Leblanc, they played hockey together. Paul was the popular guy in class and all the girls were crazy about him and I was just not going there…he was my brother’s best friend. One day Gerry came home wicked winded and said, “Erika, Paul REALLY likes you!” I said, “What do you mean?” Clueless. Well, there was this big red barn next to the RR tracks, it had lights all around the soffit, and apparently Paul must have mention to him that he liked me. Gerry told him that he would have to prove it to him by throwing a snowball and hitting one of those lights on the barn. Gerry said,” Paul didn’t just hit the light, he smashed it to smithereens, he really really likes you!” So, Paul and I became a thing at the ripe old age of 10 and 9, with my brother Gerry’s seal of approval. Our first “Date” was going to see Star Wars, which was Paul’s favorite movie. Not sure how many times he had seen it, but he had ALL the figurines and even a model of the Millennium Falcon. Gerry and I were always really close and years later at my sister’s wedding, wearing his dress blues from the USAF, I asked him if he could give me away if I were to ever get married. He said, “ Isn’t that dad’s job?” I told him,”No, he doesn’t know me like you do and I know in my heart that you would only give me away to a man that was right for me.” So he happily agreed. I asked him if he would make the man throw a snowball and knock out the lights again. And his eyes lit up and he said, “Hell yeah, that’s the only way, works like a charm!”we laughed so friggin hard! God how I miss him! He would call me on the pay phone at the barracks every week…at Lackland AFB, where he was stationed and a Medic at Wilford Hall. He would use up an entire roll of quarters each time! I Love and Miss you Gerry, so very very much! ALWAYS! Thank you for being my big bro! This year has been a tough one for some reason missing you.

As Memorial Day approaches…I’ve been having a moment and thinking a lot about my brother Gerry…ugly crying…yes, even after all this time, I allow myself that. Everyone grieves differently…for me, I embrace that pain I still feel for the most difficult loss I’ve felt so far in my lifetime. Because that pain represents just how much I truly Loved Gerry…it engraves his memory in my heart and mind…and as long as that pain remains…so does that Love. It allows me to cope, heal and process that grief…over my lifetime. I Love and Miss You Gerry SO VERY VERY MUCH…ALWAYS. I know I’ve said it a million times but…THANK YOU!

Mama, I know this is your favorite song…you loved Conway Twitty and I know that you are on the grand tour of concerts…something that you loved while you were with us. This beautiful, kind, talented, intelligent, hardworking human is the reason I’m a Mama! She’s my rainbow child with a heart of gold and a capacity to love without boundaries!
