"When All is Said and Done" (2026)

The exhibition "Like a Star at Dawn" takes its title from a metaphor in the Diamond Sutra, a Buddhist text with a profound historical predilection for waking the mind to contemplate the transient existence that all life is subject to. This exhibition currently presents a series of new works, as well as some made in the last two years, where people and nature, light and dark, temporality and eternity all meet. Dawn being the point between night and morning, and a gesture towards the circularity of time - a frame of meditative being in the world.

Mary DeVincentis "Like a Star at Dawn" is on view at FREIGHT+VOLUME until October 17

This is the artist's second solo show with the gallery, which presents a subjective and in some ways cosmological terrain in its own visual and emotional language, with each work speaking to the transience of human existence and the circularity of time.

Mary DeVincentis employs a deeply personal iconography to explore the psychological and existential dimensions of being. Creating visual narratives which are multidimensional in character, her paintings depict people, animals and nature, emphasizing their equal presence and metaphysical dimensions. Her most recent solo exhibitions include Know Your Garden at Tappeto Volante Projects in 2025, Circle Game at Andrea Festa Fine Art in 2024, and Wild Awake at Freight+Volume in 2023. DeVincentis earned her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Printmaking from St. Martin's College of Art in London, UK. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Continuing to spotlight artists in the "True Colors" exhibition that is on view until August 22 - MARY DEVINCENTIS

Mary DeVincentis employs a deeply personal iconography to investigate the dilemmas and mysteries of existence. Her paintings depict people, animals and elements of nature as equal in significance and numinosity. Her September 2022 solo exhibition Walking with Ghosts at Tappeto Volante Projects was inspired by the 12th century Persian poem The Conference of the Birds and was reviewed in the January 2023 edition of Art Forum. Previous NYC solo exhibits include Alone in This Together at M. David and Co, Out There, also at M. David and Co and Dwellers on the Threshold at David & Schweitzer Contemporary. Ongoing series include Dark Matters, paintings which investigate the shadowy side of human experience and Sin Eaters, works which depict society's saints, martyrs, scapegoats and outcasts. DeVincentis earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Maryland Institute College of Art and was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Printmaking from St. Martin’s College of Art in London, UK. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in many public and private collections. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

In this moment, marked by political turmoil, digital saturation, and acceleration, this exhibition seeks solace in painting’s capacity for pleasure, intensity, and artistic freedom while simultaneously probing its emotional, optical, and psychological potential. Moving through visuality, formalism, and décor, the works on view treat painting as subject, structure, and a proposition. Each artist explores how color mediates surface and form to articulate complex relations, perceptual states, and affects. What is at stake is not simply color as appearance, but color as something capable of organizing feeling, perception, memory, and attention while simultaneously exposing its instability and indeterminacy. taken in Tribeca, New York City by @mairedev
