Here’s a little birthday dance from me and my PP❤️ to all of you, as a heartfelt thank you. I was truly overwhelmed by the number of messages, calls, and love I received. It honestly caught me by surprise. Every single one of you who took the time to reach out, to pray for me, and to send your wishes… it meant more to me than words can fully express. Being in my late 40s🤭 and experiencing a birthday like this for the first time touched me deeply. The love was real, the energy was genuine, and I felt it all. This is a moment I will carry with me forever. Central/Southern Rwanda 🇷🇼 & Lake Victoria 🇰🇪 2025 The land of a thousand hills, and so stunningly green. Royal palaces, Inyambo cows, Kinyarwanda language, drums, and dance all tell the story of Rwanda’s rich history 🪘 Thank you! @izo_dreamchaser @allthingslys_ @basile16_ for inspiring me to visit and looking out for me 🥰 Kigali, Rwanda Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kigali, Rwanda Ethnographic Museum, Butare, Rwanda Murambi Genocide Memorial Centre, Gasaka, Rwanda King’s Palace Museum, Nyanza, Rwanda Kwigira Museum, Nyanza, Rwanda Kisumu Museum, Kisumu, Kenya Lake Victoria, Kisumu, Kenya Colonialism left its mark here, but unity building through community led traditional justice (Gacaca courts), and monthly nationwide community service (Umuganda), has helped make national recovery possible. Though there are of course diverse opinions among Rwandans about rebuilding, I was grateful to learn some of this history and dialogue through visiting genocide sites, museums, and talking to people. Thank you to every soul who took the time to share even a little bit of your story. Your strength, warmth and generosity runs deep 🙏 taken in Rwanda by @mairiturner

Soweto’s Finest Dance Studio, Newtown, Johannesburg. Some highlights from a truly incredible dance camp put together by @kine_camara and @afrodanceseattle . A week spent digging into root styles from Gauteng Province, that synthesised into the style South Africa is known for: Amapiano 🎹🇿🇦 Pantsula w/ @sibusiso_drs & @mokaledaviddrs Is’bujwa w/ @kingtomlondon Amapiano foundations w/ Phuthi Kamogelo Female Bacardi w/ @gomo_maloka Bhenga, Jit, Vosho, Locale, TIP w/ @kingofthenight_1 Amapiano choreography w/ @nasaa.reloaded Male Bacardi and Soldier w/ @hlonie.nie Waacking meets Amapiano w/ @shannyj_ Choreography video project w/ @tllhogi_m & @mjebhane_joseph To learn from the artists who continue to create Amapiano culture, in the place that gave it birth was a real honour. Zanzibar. The perfect place to wrap up 6 weeks in Kenya and Tanzania. These islands encapsulate the vibrancy and fortitude of Swahili culture. Some very dark moments in history exist here, alongside the most stunning beaches and wonderful tenacious people. 11/10. Will return. 🇹🇿 @lilpics1 @amy_cruickypants I couldn’t have asked for better ‘girls holiday’ chicks. Our week of beaches, pools, caves, islands and parties in Paje was an incredible highlight. Thank you Princess for always giving little mermaid, and Seaweedy for floating with me. The Swahili coast 90% of the population are Muslim, the colourful kitenge fabrics are popping, the biriyani slaps and the carved doors are stunning. Its all Swahili. The language and culture was formed by centuries of Indian Ocean trade, mixing African, Arabic, Indian and Persian influences. Portuguese, Omani, German and British colonial powers built, and fought over, fortifications, trade ports and towns along the East African coastline, exploiting its resources and leaving their mark. These ports were the end of the road for the East African slave trade caravans coming from the interior. Enslaved Africans would then be shipped to market on the Zanzibar islands, along with the ivory they carried on their forced journeys. People I met. Away from cities and organised hikes and safaris, my favourite part of of my time inland in southern Kenya/northern Tanzania was visiting this rural stretch of the Great Rift Valley, where the Ngorongoro highlands meet fertile volcanic slopes, game abundant savannahs and the forested lakes Eyasi and Manyara. As soon as I read about the town of Karatu and the villages of Mto Wa Mbu and Mang’ola and their surrounding diversity of traditions, languages and livelihoods, I had to cold text some locals’ numbers and setup a trip. The varying landscapes and natural resources here support diverse lifestyles. Over the centuries many groups of people have made it their home and been able to thrive side by side. Even a lively debate at the market about whether Jesus is God or the son of God was warm and peaceful. Many people here taught me about their unique tribal origins, religions and cultures. Just as the musicians in Nairobi taught me about Gengetone, and the dancers in Arusha taught me about Singeli. Just as the guides and rangers taught me about their cities, mountains and animals. The overarching message was always the same. We are all Kenyan. We are all Tanzanian. Hadza hunter-gatherers at Lake Eyasi Datoga blacksmiths and pastoralists at Mang’ola, Gorfan and Baray Maasai pastoralists at Narok Iraqw pastoralists, agriculturalists and coffee producers at Karatu Chaga agriculturalists and banana beer producers at Mto Wa Mbu Makonde wood carvers at Mto Wa Mbu 🇰🇪🇹🇿 Extremely grateful to everyone who took the time to talk to me, especially Yohana and Calvin for showing me your homes and translating for a nosey mzungu 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 As always so much love for @iisseiy @wamyliker in Arusha for your dance teaching, unmatched energy and hospitality 😘 taken in Great Rift Valley by @mairiturner
