A thrifting find from another era.

A wood-and-cane Canterbury-style magazine rack, likely mid-20th century, c. 1950s–1960s.

Designed to keep newspapers and magazines close at hand, its form is remarkably simple: an open storage cradle, woven cane panels and an overhead wooden handle that allows the entire piece to be carried from room to room.

The traditional hexagonal cane weave gives an otherwise functional household object much of its character. Today, the same form works just as naturally for books, magazines or records.

The underside is marked “PF/24 Magazine Rack Cane.” Its exact maker and production date remain unconfirmed.

An everyday object from a time when even storage was considered part of the room.

Pearl-Wick “Val-O-Seat,” c. 1960s.

Made in Long Island City, New York, the Val-O-Seat combined a dressing chair with a gentleman’s valet — a place for a jacket, trousers, watch, keys and other essentials.

Brass-finished metal, warm wood details, a small accessory tray and upholstered seating turn an everyday routine into a thoughtfully designed object.

The VAL-O-SEAT name was filed as a trademark in 1962 for a “combination clothes rack and ottoman.”

Functional design from a different way of living.

A figural butler stand, c. 1980s–1990s — part sculpture, part serving tray, part furniture.

Designed as a decorative household piece, the raised tray could hold drinks, keys, or whatever needed a temporary place. Functional, slightly eccentric, and unmistakably of its time.

One of those objects you probably weren’t looking for until you saw it.
