The TRACE Collection NOW LIVE maisonmo-mmo.com We are formed by what we encounter. Places, people, objects, history, techniques. Some remain with us consciously. Others disappear, only to return years later as instinct. England gave structure to the search. It trained the eye through art, architecture, history, preservation, and the discipline of making. Portugal brought those ideas into the hand, where thought becomes material, a line becomes a seam, and knowledge is carried forward through craft. Volume 2 exists between these two states: what we absorb and what we eventually make from it. A place leaves a trace. A hand leaves a trace in an object. Wear leaves a trace in cloth. Memory leaves a trace in instinct. What remains is the trace. The Archive Shirt The idea came first: Palimpsest. A surface marked by what came before. Written on, erased, and written over again, with traces of every previous layer still remaining. That became the foundation for the Archive Shirt. I wanted the fabric to feel like a piece of paper that had been crushed, discarded, pulled back out, flattened, and used again. It never completely returns to what it was. The marks stay. And I think there’s something beautifully symbolic about that.. The collars are interchangeable, allowing the shirt to take on a different expression each time. The proportions can be manipulated, the fabric folded, compressed, opened out or closed up, changing the way the piece sits on the body. The Archive Shirt holds so much of the language I want MAISON MO to continue speaking. It carries the ideas I return to when I design: transformation, construction, continuity, and the ability for a piece to become more personal over time. I don’t think of an archive as something sealed away or finished. I think of it as a record. Something important enough to keep, return to, study, and see differently later. Not tied completely to one moment or one collection, but a piece that establishes part of the vocabulary of the house. Something that can remain while continuing to change. And that brings me back to Palimpsest. Starting again doesn’t completely erase what came before. Over time, the shirt begins to hold more than the idea it started with. The way you wear it, shape it, handle it, all of that becomes part of the piece. It changes with you, it becomes a record of you too. That, to me, is what makes something worth archiving. Hands. Many hands are involved in the creation of a MAISON MO piece. Each fold, seam, pleat, or loose trimming of fabric is carefully tended to by artisans and creators. MAISON MO believes in the preservation of traditional processes. Fashion, designed with trust, respect, and understanding between each pair of hands a piece passes through. A team is a necessity in fashion – one can’t exist without the other. The finished garment carries evidence of each of them. Knowledge passed from one person to the next, refined through repetition, patience, and care. To preserve process is also to preserve the people behind it, allowing skill, instinct, and tradition to continue through the act of making.
