[design] the hollyhock house, hollywood | 1919

Perched on a hill in East Hollywood, the Hollyhock House was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first project in Los Angeles—and one of his most idiosyncratic. Commissioned in 1919 by oil heiress and arts patron Aline Barnsdall, the house was meant to be the centerpiece of a larger artistic complex that never fully materialized.

Wright drew inspiration from pre-Columbian temples and Mayan forms, creating a bold fusion of ancient geometry and Californian modernism. The house is named after Barnsdall’s favorite flower—the hollyhock—which Wright stylized into abstract motifs repeated throughout the building: in the columns, the window grilles, the furniture, even the textiles.

With its tilted rooflines, open courtyards, and dramatic water features, the house was radical for its time—and not without friction. Wright and Barnsdall clashed frequently, and she eventually donated the house to the City of Los Angeles in 1927.

Today, Hollyhock House is a UNESCO World Heritage site—a rare West Coast example of Wright’s vision, and a monument to architecture that breaks rules and builds new language from personal symbols.

[design] the gamble house, pasadena | 1908

Tucked into the quiet hills of Pasadena, The Gamble House is a masterclass in craft, where form meets function with quiet conviction. Built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble family, it was intended as a winter home—and became a lasting testament to the Arts and Crafts movement in America.

Designed by Greene & Greene, every detail was handcrafted: joinery exposed, fixtures custom-forged, and the Japanese suba motif—drawn from the guard of a samurai sword—repeated throughout the woodwork like a quiet signature of intention and strength.

After David’s death in 1923, Mary remained in the home until 1929. The family continued to use it for decades, preserving every detail, before eventually gifting it to the city of Pasadena and USC’s School of Architecture in 1966. Today, it stands untouched—a living blueprint of design with soul.

[inspo] saint laurent rive droite, paris | 13.02.2025

This month has been a good one for @ysl ..unveiling a transformed Rive Droite boutique after a year long renovation. A centrepiece of this transformation is the exclusive collaboration with Donald Judd. Renowned for his minimalist aesthetic, American artist Donald Judd‘s furniture designs have been reimagined in two new finishes — steel and traffic white painted aluminium— specifically for this space. These pieces, originally conceptualised in 1984, include chairs, tables, desks, and beds, now rendered in Saint Laurent’s signature monochromatic palette.

This fusion of Judd’s geometric precision with Vaccarello’s architectural approach creates a harmonious dialogue between art and fashion within the boutique.

[design inspo] george nakashima, pennsylvania | 1954

George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a Japanese-American woodworker, architect, and designer, known for his organic craftsmanship and the use of natural wood. His work merged traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with modernist principles. His approach was deeply spiritual, treating each piece of wood as a unique entity with its own soul, working with its natural imperfections rather than against them.
