for you, for you, for you by @makalegend

so i have this like weird obsession with naming inanimate objects. like it’s beeeen a problem and it’s always peak when you meet someone who has the same name as your stuff. like i met a jerry a couple years ago and i was like, “rah. my calculator’s name in 11th grade was jerry, ykno?” this jerry turned out to be crazy though. like rogue as fuck. nothing like my jerry.

anyway, my camera’s name is cairo.

i’ve been meaning to do a series of like self-portraits to kinda document (document isn’t the word but i can’t think of the right word rn maybe it’s express but that doesn’t seem right either tbf idk) how i’m feeling. but i’ve really been struggling to get out of bed. like every day.

so yesterday, as is my wont, i was lying in bed listening to this really sad song. it’s got this lyric “light, dark, light again.” that keeps looping. and the blinds were closed and the tiniest bit of light was creeping through the sides. it was all very morbid and like super emo (see slide 2). and i thought, “shit. i should take a picture of this.” and so i did. (i know i infamously don’t share my pictures on here but bear with me)

i had this whole idea in my head about how it was gonna look and it was gonna be black and white and just like teeming with symbolism. (also, i’m awkward as a turtle in front of a camera now and I’m tryna fix that. like remember when i used to pull up every week like, “yo, look at me in that drip”? neither do i.)

and so i’m sat there editing like, “ayo, we are cooking, man. look at us!” and i carry on making different iterations and just like fr losing myself in it until i realise that i’ve completely lost the plot and the picture is making less and less sense. like it’s just all wrong. so i go from really liking it to hating it.

then a friend of mine said to me, “sometimes the meaning behind a picture is worth way more than how it actually looks.”

so i just left it like that (uhm see slide 1?)

and i ended up loving the picture. ‘cause i’ll always look back on that picture and think:

“that’s the first day cairo got me out of bed.”
