Christmas Day marked two months since you left this earth for your Heavenly home. Somehow it felt right that all of your favorite people were together on your favorite day, trying to celebrate while feeling the weight of your absence in everything. Two days later, we were in your favorite city- seeing your favorite musical, walking your favorite streets, making every stop you loved. The city is loud, but the silence without you here is deafening.
I used to sympathize with people who posted during the holidays about missing a loved one. Now I understand in a way I never wanted to. Grief is heavy. It settles into your chest and follows you everywhere. You don’t truly know how consuming it is until you lose someone who was part of your everyday life, someone woven into your heart. Someone who made things brighter just by being there. You smile, you show up, you go through the motions- but inside, everything feels hollow. The holidays feel less warm, less joyful, less bright.
Doing everyday life without you is hard. Doing holidays without you is harder. And being in NYC (on a trip you planned) without you leading the way, telling us where to go and when to be there, has been the hardest of all.
I wish every single day that you were still here. My days feel longer, quieter, lonelier. My heart feels emptier; like it’s missing a piece that can never be replaced. I miss you in the big moments and the small ones, in ways that catch me off guard. I can’t imagine a lifetime without you, Lynn Basden, and yet somehow I’m being asked to live one.
We took you to all your favorite spots in New York, and I finally got you to go to The Met. Your spirit felt close, yet my heart still aches for you to be here experiencing it all with us.
My bestest, bestest friend. My angel forever. Thank you for being the mother-in-law I would choose in every single lifetime. Thank you for loving me so fiercely that losing you hurts this much. A love so big that the grief feels endless.
