Opened in 1971, Lumumba Hall is Makerere University’s largest residence, named after the iconic Congolese freedom fighter and first Prime Minister of the DRC, Patrice Lumumba. Its residents, affectionately known as the “Elephants,” are famous across campus for their vibrant solidarity and their long-standing alliance with the women of Mary Stuart Hall, a partnership affectionately dubbed “Lumbox.” Standing guard at the center of their grounds is the famous Gongom monument—a statue clad in a university gown that serves as an enduring symbol of unity, tradition, and hard work. Having recently undergone major structural overhauls to modernize its facilities, this legendary hall continues to stand as a powerhouse of student culture and university pride.
