Ditching Meta. Check out my website. Remember websites? Let's bring 'em back.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
They were supposed to connect us. But it turns out there's big money in making apps addictive for the purpose of harvesting data and serving ads. The more our eyes are on this app (whether it's a positive experience or not), the more profit for Meta. Very much at the cost of our well-being.

Fuck that.

Let's go build community and make weird art. ✌️ Written in various colors of pen on brown kraft paper:

I read about how tarot decks used to be hand painted and include personalised symbolism like family members, so I started customizing my own!

Customizing the deck makes it more special and less likely to just sit on a shelf. And starting with a stupid meme ought to keep me from taking it too seriously. by @makeronthemove

I'm careful to only cut non-fruiting vines this time of year. I don't wanna waste good berries we can pick later! (Or accidentally squish them in the towel. Cuz that would be yucky.) by @makeronthemove

I put the lumber cart on hold because rainy season is imminent here in Western WA and the carport needs a new roof very badly. We had a rainy spell recently that lit a fire under my butt to get this done, so I pulled off the flashing and shingles today. Thankfully, it was much easier than I thought it would be. Here's hoping I can replace the OSB and get it all sealed back up before the rain really starts! (The forecast is clear for the next week or so.) by @makeronthemove

I've just finished building a lumber cart to help organize the giant pile of wood that's taking up much of the carport so that I can actually use the space to make stuff! I didn't buy anything for this build aside from the caster wheels. All wood and hardware was what I had lying around. It's lumpy, not even a little bit square, and full of mistakes and damaged wood. But I made it! And I got a lot of good practice along the way!

Thursday Aug 1st was Lammas/Lughnasadh/Loaf Mass, which are traditional harvest festivals. About halfway between the Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox, this festival marks the beginning of harvest season. Corn/wheat dolls are a common tradition that I decided to try my hand at. We don't have wheat or corn on our property (yet) so I gathered some grains and grasses from our fields. Many of these appear to have grown from the feed and hay for the horses that the previous owner had.

Species I identified include Timothy, Cheat, Yorkshire Fog, and Cock's Foot. I also found that the highly invasive Himalayan Blackberry so pervasive in the PNW provides fantastic long strong fibers for weaving/tying.

I noted that most harvest dolls use a fan shape to make a dress or skirt in place of legs, so I went in a different direction and made a dude with a giant beard in a kilt/skirt thing. It was frustrating at times to work on, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It was a fun challenge to make something entirely from natural materials found on our property.

Another harvest festival tradition is baking bread, which I also did with my partner, Carly! Getting more in touch with the changing of the seasons and the cycle of nature around us has been a really nice way to feel more grounded and connected to the earth.

I would encourage you to get out and, as the kids say, touch grass.

#lammas #lughnasadh #loafmass #harvest #corndolly #touchgrass A primitive looking doll made out of various natural fibers. Its body is simple wicker in a T pose, arms straight out, and head made of a bundle of smaller pieces, giving it a hairdo like a bundle of matches. It has a large beard and mustache made from a fluffy cat tail looking plant, and a skirt or kilt made from some kind of grain. by @makeronthemove

A friend visiting from the Netherlands asked me to make a small art piece based on the idea of "structure". Somehow this is what I came up with. I took trash from my partner's snack, cut it open, and framed it out like a tiny modern wooden construction. And while it's definitely sturdier now than it was originally, I still don't trust unprotected traveling on a plane. So I also made a tiny wooden crate, of course! Two objects rest atop an aged wooden surface in a green lawn. On the left is a small Korean strawberry milk carton that has had the back and part of one side cut out, revealing a wooden frame much like the frame of a house. As if the small box is actually a tiny building. To the right is a wooden shipping crate slightly larger than the milk carton, complete with "FRAGILE" and "UP ⬆️" stamps and the Maker On The Move rubber duck logo. by @makeronthemove

And here's the most intense spot I got into on the trail during the @thegambler500 this weekend! This little truck handled it like a champ! I had so much fun out on the trail with these guys. And we were picking up trash along the way, helping take care of public lands! Awesome event. I'll definitely be back.

Here's the second most difficult spot I got into this weekend at the @thegambler500. Huge thanks to the guys I was riding with for guiding me through some tricky spots. There's a board we found under the traction boards, by the way. That's why it makes that crunching sound.
