Wonderskin lip stain… where were you for the first two seasons of @TellMeLiesHulu?! 💋

Thank you, @wonderskin, for gifting me your lip stains to try on Season 3. With all our steamy scenes, I wish I’d had these in my kit from the beginning.

@gracevanpatten loves the iconic #PillowTalk by @charlottetilbury, and “Whimsical” is basically its bulletproof counterpart on her—the familiar lip color she loves, with extra staying power for filming and kissing.

For her sexy date-night look with Alex, we chose “Hayley,” a neutral red that gave her lips more presence. That fiery shift in color helped set the mood for the scene.

That’s what I love about makeup design: finding the shades that tell the story and the formulas that can keep up. 🤍

Clean makeup has entered its high-definition era.

When I started working in makeup in the mid-2000s, choosing “clean” almost always meant compromising on something — the shade range, pigment, texture, coverage, or wear.

Even years later, while department-heading From Dusk Till Dawn, I remember buying a mineral concealer that was basically a pile of sand-colored minerals you moved around the face and hoped would become skin.

The real test came when I worked with Gina Rodriguez back-to-back on two productions throughout her first pregnancy. We needed the entire kit to meet clean standards — but clean didn’t get a pass. These products still had to survive long shoot days, close-ups, constant touch-ups, and high-definition cameras. They needed to perform exactly like my conventional favorites.

And they did.

“Clean” isn’t one regulated standard, and it doesn’t automatically mean safer or better. I’m speaking specifically about artistry and performance.

Today, I can build a complete professional kit with silky pigment, fluid metallics, rich gel liners, long-wearing mascara, nuanced complexion correction, gripping primers, setting sprays, and beautiful finishes.

We’ve gone from moving mineral sand around the face to having genuine professional choices. These are the products that earned their place in my working kit.

Marianne ✨

One of my favorite things about designing makeup is understanding that beautiful skin doesn’t stop at 20.

For Marianne, portrayed by @gabriellapession_official on Tell Me Lies (@tellmelieshulu), I wanted her complexion to feel polished, luminous and completely like skin—never heavy, overly powdered or as though we were trying to erase every bit of texture.

As a woman over 40 myself, I’m becoming even more interested in the little changes that make a BIG difference when working with 40+ skin. Less is more.

Skincare, prep and powder placement are everything. 🤍

@sarah.creal has been one of my favorite recent discoveries, while @kohgendo and @cledepeaubeaute have had permanent places in my arsenal for years.

The goal isn’t to make skin look younger. It’s to make it look beautiful on camera: hydrated, dimensional and glowing.

I’m thinking I should start sharing more of my favorite 40+ skin prep and complexion tricks, along with the eye + cheek products I love—both from my kit and what I actually use myself!

Sitting with @rodriguez, his daughter, and watching his band, Chignon, performing in the LA felt like the perfect full circle moment to reflect on nearly two decades of memories, opportunities, mentorship, friendships, and creative family that all began in Robert’s world.

So grateful for every job, every heart and every moment along the way. Thank you, @taydools, for bringing these memories back. Full circle and full of love. 🙏🏼❤️
