24-hour nostalgia binge after 12 years of marriage.

1. I’ve been trying to get to @swensensofsf since we moved here. I haven’t seen much about this spot highlighted anywhere, but please go.
2. The San Francisco treat.
3. Got a mocha and a PSL at the snobby coffee shop.
4. Didn’t really even hang in Chinatown just walked by this is purely for the aesthetic.
5. Special but unstuffy at @thebigfoursf. Two tops are seated side by side and they refill your glass when your husband is sipping too slowly bc “he shouldn’t drink alone.”
6. Apparently the bar at the @ritzcarltonsanfrancisco opened the same weekend we stayed there, it was packed with silly people like all hotel bars should be. by @makingitwithmeleyna

I was in this Facebook group in like 2007 called “I Will Go Slightly Out of My Way to Step On That Crunchy-Looking Leaf” there were so many random groups like this but you didn’t post in them or anything? They just were a digital footprint of your ~random~ personality. It’s like they were memes before we could screen shot status updates or canva made graphic design everyone’s passion, so we just joined a group to signify our alignment instead of RTing.

Anyway that’s what these @lonelymountainfarm ground cherries made me think of. May your weekend be full of sunshine and crunchy leaves directly in your footpath—it’s that shoulder season magic. by @makingitwithmeleyna

New/old: I first shared this Kim-Cheese back in 2022—I finally wrote it up for you. Think pimento cheese, but also definitely not.

It’s perfect for any long weekend plans you have the next couple of days, with friends or alone (often the best weekend plans). It’s also a reminder of the long history of third culture cooking. I hope you see some of yourself in this, and if not, I hope you learn something from it. Mostly I just hope you think it's delicious. #thirdculturecooking #labordayweekend #bbqfood #pupus #girldinner by @makingitwithmeleyna

An elder millennial perimidlife crisis where I thought I was drowning in imposter syndrome, but turns out what I was feeling was actually on the opposite end of the spectrum--washed up.

Plus what you're probably here for, a recipe for brown butter mocha krispie treats. Comment TREATS... jk link is in bio and stories until it expires. by @makingitwithmeleyna

Did you know if you get home 25 minutes before you have to leave for the 4th annual Tomato Girl Summer, you can skip the whipped tofu you were planning on for this base of these market tomatoes and just scoop and slop it on top instead? No one will no the difference unless you tell them. Oops.

Professional hazard when you get together with women who do food for a living. We’re showing up letting you know how much better it was *supposed* to be, when in reality it’s already one of the most delicious things ever.

Professional hazard of being a woman—the bar for yourself is unreachable while everyone else is just happy you’re there. Cheers to @proofcollective for hosting us all as we are. by @makingitwithmeleyna

Washington: food edition. First of all, I need to say how grateful I am that we were able to visit this city safely back in June. I am so troubled by last week’s gun violence and children shooting children. Seattle was a gracious host.

We ate a lot of really great things, I actually did a terrible job taking food photos. Not pictured favs listed at the end.

//This @jacksfishspot sidewalk crab cocktail was my afternoon snack while everyone else was getting sweets.
//My daughter’s super solid chowder earlier in the day at Jack’s.
// @piroshkypiroshky was great; we did not wait in any sort of line. This was salmon, the seasonal rhubarb was a real treat.
// @9th__and_hennepin_donut was a last minute addition on the way to the airport. One of my favorite bites of the trip.
// @delanceyseattle not pictured was the fantastic salad (fangirled a bit seeing @molly.wizenberg inside eating with her little fam)
//I don’t recall exactly what this sandwich was at @bongo.seattle, but the real star was the coconut guava cake we brought back to the airbnb and ate while watching Hitch, what a stunner!!

NOT PICTURED
//Ranier Teriyaki, loved by everyone what a gem of a place.
//The slabs of salmon I cooked on the Airbnb grill that we ate in the sunshine looking out at the sound.
// @storyville was a really great stop at Pike Place, it’s upstairs and air conditioned and the couches are comfy and a perfect afternoon reset.
// @1920apikeplace cultured gelato, truly have never eaten anything like this before. Line was quick and absolutely worth it.

Washington: nature edition. This was in June, immediately post graduation season and the first family vacation we’ve taken in actual years. After a very intense spring, it was quite literally the breath of fresh air I needed.

Put your oxygen mask on before helping others blah blah blah that is actually very hard to practice. I don’t have a ton of patience for martyrdom, but holy hell how do you not give it all to these two lives you brought into this world and who probably saved your own? Dramatic? No, just honest. I fuck this job up every day, but some of them are still really golden. taken in Grapeview, Washington by @makingitwithmeleyna

I make this watermelon juice+campari+gin summertime drink. It’s summer. I bought a watermelon yesterday. So, here we are.

Last week the yellow watermelons I tasted at a particular farmer at the market were truly the best I’ve ever had but I was like hmm not today! I thought about it all week and I spent $18 on one yesterday and it tastes like nothing. Mother Nature plays jokes.

Joke’s on her, I froze it and blended it into this slush instead. Joke’s on me, I actually prefer this drink with juice on the rocks.

I haven’t made it this year, but according to my Notes (just like, the Notes app not like, capital-N-important-Notes), the ratio is .5 oz gin, .75 oz Campari, 2 oz watermelon juice. It’s an impossibly gorgeous juicy red, and a cute little sipper that won’t knock you over.

Happy Friday. May the melon you pick be a lush and lovely reflection of you. by @makingitwithmeleyna

I didn’t salt this pot of beans enough while cooking so I had to adjust at the end and they were too salty. SUCH IS LIFE. But you know what they were still better than whatever ~brothy bean~ business people are still telling themselves they love. Because while a bowl of beans in its own broth is fine, sure, a bowl of creamy beans is better.

It’s rat patootie season! A few reminders:

1. It’s peak farmers market season. Skip the grocery store and potential diarrhea and purchase from small farms. Less handling+more attention to detail=less potential for contamination.
2. His name is Remy, not Ratatouille. 🐀
3. Making dinner for your new mom friend doesn’t have to be a casserole. (Not that there is anything wrong with that at all.)
