🇸🇸🏀♿ MALAT WEI — A SOUTH SUDANESE WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL PIONEER! 🔥

Malat Wei’s journey is one of resilience, basketball and giving back. 🇸🇸❤️

Born in South Sudan, Malat contracted polio as a child and later grew up as a refugee in Ethiopia before his family resettled in Texas. He discovered wheelchair basketball as a teenager and went on to play at a high level, including professionally in France.

In 2018, Malat returned to South Sudan for the first time since childhood and helped coach and develop wheelchair basketball players in Juba. 🇸🇸🏀♿

In 2026, he was listed as the coach of Libya’s men’s wheelchair basketball team for the Arab Championship.

🔥 FROM REFUGEE CAMP → WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL STAR → COACH → GIVING BACK TO SOUTH SUDAN.

A powerful South Sudan basketball story. 🇸🇸❤️🏀♿

Inclusion is not about giving special
treatment. It is about removing barriers so everyone has the same opportunity to enjoy life. 🇸🇸☝🏿🌟

Representing South Sudan in Paralympic wheelchair basketball began with a vision. Faith that one day we will achieve this dream is “WHY” I keep pushing. Own your identity —unapologetically. (SSD)

“By the end of the six-year Interim Period, I want Southern Sudan to be earning at least two billion dollars from oil revenues, two billion dollars from tourism, at least six billion dollars from agriculture and other enterprises, so that we have annual revenues of at least ten billion dollars. All this requires peace and stability all over Southern Sudan. Over the six years, I want Southern Sudan transformed into the heaven on earth of Africa….”Dr John Garang 🇸🇸💪🏿 ❤️

Meet @malatwei Born in South Sudan, Malat and his family fled the civil war and spent ten years in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. In 2006 the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees granted them asylum and they rebuilt their lives in Houston, Texas. There he discovered wheelchair basketball through the TIRR Memorial Hermann adaptive sports program. In 2013 he led Houston to its first Junior Varsity Championship and launched an elite career that took him to professional clubs in France and Spain.

Malat’s purpose has always gone beyond the court. He partnered with the International Committee of the Red Cross to bring wheelchair basketball to South Sudan and create new opportunities for inclusion. He later became Head Coach of the Libyan National Wheelchair Basketball Team and guided them to their first international tournament appearance in Kuwait. Today he continues to grow the sport by coaching and developing local wheelchair basketball clubs across Libya.
