“California Farmhouse Commission” ©️2016

(Not sure the exact dimensions, so that’s why I’m included for scale in the second slide)

I made this piece as a commission back in 2016 of a Victorian farmhouse in St. Helena, California. It went straight to the collector after I finished making it so it was never shown to the public. They were gracious enough to lend it back to me for my current show ‘Synecdoche’ at St. Mary’s College Museum of Art, so now YOU, dear viewer, can see an early work of mine that helped me hone my skills as a model maker, spending countless hours trying to figure out how to carve and then cast those hundreds of little spindles and fudge all the little details along the way. Took the better part of 2015 to make the damn thing, but in the end I’m glad I pulled it off and it’s survived all these years. It was like being reunited with an old friend when I saw it again.

Up through December 13th at @smcmoa

My solo show, ‘Synecdoche’ opens today at @smcmoa

Opening Reception is 5-8pm today Sept. 17th at 1928 St. Mary’s Rd. Moraga Ca.

Hope you can make it out!

The work in the show is a culmination of 10 years of my art practice. The work, other than a few new works and an old commission were originally made for shows at 3 different venues across that 10 year span:

2019 ‘Skyline Friendly Organizations’ at @guerrerogallery
2022 ‘City Limit’ at @recologyair
2023,2026 ‘Nonfiction’ & ‘Composite Order’ @sebastiangladstone

Huge thanks and shout out to those venues for believing in me and giving me the space to exhibit my work and further my practice. It wouldn’t have been possible without you all.

And lastly, thank you to the staff at @smcmoa for putting this show together, especially @blroyer for all the planning, vision and superbly deft writing skills. I’m honored that I was selected to show with your program! ❤️🙏🖇️ by @malcolm.kenter

❗️Mark your calendars❗️

Next Thursday, September 17 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm is the Opening Celebration of Fall 2026 Exhibitions!

San Francisco-based artist Malcolm W. Kenter constructs architectural paintings that respond to the urban environment and conflicting aesthetic discourses. Framed through the Arts & Crafts pursuit of 19th-century architect and collateral descendant Reverend Joseph Worcester, this exhibition presents Kenter’s development over the past 10 years alongside select works from SMCMoA’s permanent collection. Through the lens of craft and meditative care, Kenter compiles from the utilitarian components and worn markings of San Francisco’s built architecture and urban spaces to draw attention to the narrative of the city from the 1800s to today.

Be sure to also join us for Kenter’s Artist Talk on November 19 at 10:00am. by @malcolm.kenter

For the last 5 years I’ve been working on a body of work of embroidered needlework tapestries. I’ve finally decided to show the first one I started back in 2021, and over 80k stitches later, I just recently finished it and had it framed. I haven’t shown many people these works so it’s a surreal feeling to release them into the world. I wanted to exhibit the first piece I made in S.F. so that the people who watched me develop it over the years could come see it in person. Shout out Golden Gate Needlepoint Store for all the thread and encouragement.

It is included in Rebecca Camacho Presents summer group show “Lucky Number 7” opening tonight June 30th 5-7pm. Plus when the clock turns over to midnight it will be my birthday so come through and celebrate and see the work in person.

Two years ago I installed a piece of faux infrastructure on the side of the studio of visionary San Francisco artist and friend Stephen Lichty. Hiding in plain sight, I wonder if anyone has noticed it and wondered at its utility? Of which, it has none.
