Late last year, a former client referred a double murder case to me—one that will stay with me for the rest of my career. The case involved a 21-year-old who shot two of his friends while under the influence of a controlled substance. The facts were not just bad—they were devastating.

The day before I was retained, his public defender was preparing to enter a plea agreement that would have resulted in two consecutive life sentences. Desperate to explore every possible option, his mother took out a loan to hire my firm because she could not live with the thought of not at least trying.

Recognizing the gravity of the case, I called upon my brother and colleague, @pd3law to join me in this fight. And when I say “fight,” I mean it—we went to war for this kid. We sacrificed sleep, time with our families, and countless hours scrutinizing every detail of the case. Our investigation of the scene involved revealed multiple inconsistencies that had previously gone unnoticed. We compiled comprehensive legal and factual arguments, presenting several detailed mitigation packets to the District Attorney’s office to demonstrate why their theory of the case was flawed.

Yesterday, we took a calculated risk by presenting our arguments before a superior court judge on a non negotiated. As a result, all murder charges—including felony murder—were dismissed, along with the hijacking charge. Our client ultimately received a 24-year sentence with parole eligibility on two counts of manslaughter. Given Georgia’s parole guidelines, he is likely to serve approximately 65% of that time, meaning he will be released in about 12 years after already serving 2 years awaiting trial.

We took a case that was destined for a double life sentence and fought it down to a term that gives this young man a real chance at rebuilding his life. This is what we call a victory. But beyond that, we made a promise to his mother—we told her we would bring her son home. And today, we can say with confidence that we did our job.
