This is the other side of South Africa we observed during our trip. I felt that I wanted to bring these photos back to share what we saw & experienced.

•Load shedding - this is where electricity is shut down for a period of time (usually around 2.5 hrs) that would occur 2-3 times a day. This is said to be due to the systems incapacity to meet the demands of the populations energy requirement. One of the ways in which we saw that this affected the population was water sanitation, and caused some people to be ill from drinking tap water. During parts of our trip we had to plan our day around the times of load shedding.

•At shanty towns we saw the incomplete self made houses, most times made out of tin sheets and parts that were stolen. We were told that some who have committed crime also live in this area who are mixed in amongst the innocent.

•At the Imizamo Yethu township, we went inside one of the shacks that was an estimated 6ft by 8.8ft room, that is shared by 3 people.

• We also went inside a pre-school at the township and had the privilege to interact with the children there, who showed lots of excitement and love when we walked in and also some, who tried to be a pocket thief.

The people here have limited access to food (food security), limited access to safe water and adequate sanitation, limited use of electricity, safety issues, children who aren’t able to access adequate education and healthcare and so on…

And this situation consequently leads people to become beggars on the roads, use their child/baby as a way to gain sympathy who is also exposed to the sun all day, and some who commit theft and criminal acts in order to survive.

It was a shocking and emotional experience to witness and see the conditions these people were living in. It was a real eye opener. We hope that these conditions for the people in South Africa improves, as the government and their system improves, and there will be more support, safety and opportunities for the people of this country 🙏🏼🇿🇦 taken in South Africa by @malisa_beets

South Africa trip 🇿🇦🦁

What a one of a kind trip this has been❤️- there were so many spectacular and awe-inspiring moments, but then also many eye opening experiences.

We went to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Game Reserve and the last stop to Sun City 🌞

It was a wonderful time spent with my love, Clayton and to see & experience his beautiful hometown ❤️🇿🇦 taken in South Africa by @malisa_beets
