Recently, I’ve been struggling with imposter syndrome, and it’s made me take a step back and reflect on my why.

To me, design has always been a mental game. When I first started at the College of DuPage, I was studying interior design while also struggling with an eating disorder. During that time, I poured myself into my schoolwork, searching for a routine and a sense of balance that made me feel fulfilled. I loved the process of design, but as my mental health declined throughout the year, I found myself losing the meaning behind what I was creating.

When I realized I needed another elective to fill my schedule, I stumbled upon a floral arranging class. At first, I signed up because I thought it would be a fun break in my day. But I quickly realized that the design principles I loved in interior design could be expressed through plants and living materials. It soon became my favorite class. More than that, it became an escape from my own mind and reignited my inspiration for life. It taught me to slow down, connect with nature, and appreciate the small joys that are so easy to overlook.

Taking that class gave me the confidence to take a leap of faith and fully commit to landscape design. Since then, I’ve realized that, for me, it’s always been about happiness. I want to create spaces that encourage people to pause, appreciate the natural world, and reconnect with themselves. If a landscape can spark even a small moment of joy or peace for someone, then I’ve done something meaningful.

Link in my bio to my interior design portfolio! I graduate next week with a degree in interior design, and will finish my horticulture degree with a landscape design & construction certification early this summer!

While I am not pursuing a career in interior design anymore, I am still proud of all the work I did in school. Interior design has helped me become confident in my design process, and given me countless skills that I can apply in my landscape design career.

My main goals for my portfolio were to showcase my schematic planning, and highlight my playful design style. I also incorporated pictures I took for horticulture phenology reports, and put an emphasis on biophilic and evidence based design. by @mall8ry
