POSTS STORIES REELS
Since its premiere in 1742, G. F. Handel's "Messiah" has been in nearly continuous performance, presenting a musical tapestry that recounts the story of Christ’s life, from birth through death and resurrection. Duke Chapel’s own Messiah concerts began in 1933 and have become a beloved tradition of the Duke and Durham communities. This year’s performances on December 4, 5, and 6 will be presented on period instruments with Baroque-era tuning, and will include selections from Parts I, II, and III. The program will last approximately two hours and fifteen minutes with intermission. Purchase tickets: See link in bio. 🦄 CREATURE FEATURE 01 🦇 What if a medieval encyclopedia, a collection of fantastical beasts, and a contemporary art song cycle all got together and decided to make YOUR day significantly weirder? Meet The Creatures: A Bestiary Retold by composer Steven Sérpa (@sjserpa ), with poetry by Jeffery Beam! Inspired by the medieval tradition of bestiaries (essentially, creature encyclopedias featuring a delightful mix of real animals, mythical beasts, folklore, and questionable scientific observations), this cycle brings a whole menagerie to life through music. We’re talking camels. Manticores. Beavers. Unicorns. Salamanders. Whales. And more! Some are playful. Some are mysterious. Some are potentially dangerous. All of them have something to say. And no, you do NOT need a degree in music history to enjoy this. If you like a good story, a little mystery, and the occasional musical creature feature, you’re already qualified. Swipe through to meet some of the inhabitants of this particular bestiary, and then come hear them for yourself! 📅 Saturday, October 3 | 2 PM 📍 Durham County Public Library 300 N Roxboro St, Durham NC 🎟️ FREE! Pre-registration suggested! Event details: https://durhamcountylibrary.libcal.com/event/17151011 And if you can’t make it this Saturday, never fear! We’ll be bringing the full concert to Raleigh on October 17, streaming it FREE on Twitch October 25, and making two appearances at the NC Museum of Art on November 14! And don’t forget you can grab a sweet set of stickers (some are featured in THIS POST!) made by @studiouteki at the shows! #ParadoxOpera #CreatureFeature #ArtSong #ContemporaryClassical #Opera by @mallarmemusic

Last 2 weeks have been exhilarating!! I concluded a marathon of performing 9 concerts in 15 days. My rep consisted of newly written works and the avant-garde to Romantic and Arab music. I lived in the worlds of Brahms, Debussy, Arvo Pärt, Tan Dun, George Crumb, Kodály, Janello, Glinsky, Umm Kulthum, alongside the readings of Etaf Rum. I am very grateful for the warmth and generosity of the collaborators, hosts, presenters, and audiences who made this possible. Here are snapshots of April collaborations: • Duke Chinese Ensemble • Mllarme Chamber Players with Elaine Funaro • Recitals with Helene Jeanney and Jennifer Curtis • George Crumb’s Voice of the Whale with Teddy Robie & Kelariz Keshavarz at UNC Chapel Hill • Literature and music with Etaf Rum and Jen Curtis, hosted by Rand Brandes. Grateful for the richness of this life and for the connections that music brings. ❤️ by @mallarmemusic
🎶 Last Sunday at our final concert of the semester, soloists, members of the Chapel's Evensong Singers, and the Mallarmé Music ensemble presented contemporaneous music from G. F. Handel and J. S. Bach. Dr. Philip Cave, the Chapel's conductor-in-residence, directed the performance. ➡️ "Together, these works illuminate two complementary approaches to sacred music in the early eighteenth century: one shaped for public celebration, the other for contemplation and prayer," Dr. Cave wrote in the concert program. 🔗 Watch a recording of the concert on our YouTube channel. by @mallarmemusic
