“we left the NICU but the NICU never really left us”
one year ago, mccall came in a whirlwind at 30 weeks and spent a lot of her firsts with friends in the nicu growing because of it. it took me a year to finally be comfortable sharing about this experience online. the NICU was the most transformative, faith-confirming, helpless, community filled, terrifying, ambivalent, beautiful experience; and, i don’t know if i will ever have the words to capture mccall’s birth and first 38 days. i do know that gratitude will always top the list of feelings here. just eternal gratitude for every nurse, doctor, tech and specialist who cared for our baby throughout her time in the NICU. parts of me can’t believe that it has been a year since we entered those double yellow doors for the first time while the other half can’t remember a world or version of myself that ever existed before we did. happy first birthday to our perfect, miracle, angel baby girl. you have kept us on our toes and full of joy from the moment you arrived and watching you grow will always be our greatest honor in this life. taken in Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children by @mallison.smith
