Decided to simplify my life… accidentally started a homestead

All that work for… this 🫠

Planted over 100 sunflower seeds. Used the highest grade soil and compost. Watered them almost every morning for months. 🫩

And this single flower is all I have to show for it.

Apparently Mother Nature has a sense of humor too because this variety was supposed to grow 12–14 feet tall.

So anyway, here’s my 14 inch sunflower 🌻

Willow is finding her spot in the fluffy butt hut 💜

Chickens have a social hierarchy, and when you add a new bird, she has to figure out where she fits into it. That can mean chasing, pecking, squawking, posturing and a whole lot of “WHO TF ARE YOU?!” 😂

It can look brutal to us, but this behavior is completely normal. The flock is basically having a very aggressive group meeting about who’s in charge.

The important part is knowing the difference between normal pecking order drama and dangerous bullying.

🐔 A few pecks? Normal.
🐔 Chasing? Normal.
🐔 Squawking and posturing? Welcome to chicken politics.
🚨 Blood, relentless attacking, or preventing her from eating/drinking? Time to intervene.

And eventually… everyone settles into their new positions.

So if you’re new to chickens and see your flock acting like they’ve suddenly joined a tiny feathered WWE match, don’t panic.

They’re just figuring out the new social structure.

All this work just to have David come home and inform us that we built it all wrong. 🫠

What took us 4 hours took him approximately 18 minutes to disassemble and rebuild himself… and he did it with no cussing, no grunts, no complaints, nothing touching, falling nor smooshing him. 😂

PSA: you can stop buying expensive chicken treats… you might already have the best one in your yard! 🌱🐓

Fresh grass clippings are one of my favorite free treats to give my flock. Here’s why👇🏼

🌱They’re packed with vitamins like A & E.
🌱They provide natural fiber to support healthy digestion.
🌱Chickens love scratching through them looking for bugs and seeds.
🌱It encourages natural foraging behavior and helps prevent boredom.
🌱They’re completely free and reduce waste from mowing.

❌ Be sure to NOT feed grass clippings from lawns treated with fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or weed killers. If you aren’t 100% sure what’s been sprayed on the grass, don’t risk it.
‼️ Spread out the grass clippings if your chickens do not spread them out themselves. This prevents the clippings from becoming sour or impacted.
❌ If your lawn mower is leaking gas or oil, do not feed clippings to your chickens.
❗️Make sure the grass clippings aren’t too long and that your chickens have grit available to them.

This week we got chickens! 🐓

On Monday David and I picked up a Black Copper Maran, who is the cuddliest girl I have ever met, and an Isa Brown, Betty White, who is an egg laying machine! 🪺

On Wednesday I saw a FB post that someone had a Golden Laced Wyandotte and a Black Onyx who needed a home after a tornado took out their farm. Immediately, I hopped in my car and headed their way! Meet Maximus Decimus and Big Bertha! 🖤🧡

I warned David of chicken math and now he gets to experience it first hand. 4 down, many more to come! 👩🏼‍🌾🐓🐓🐓🐓

“How about forever?” I said, “YES!!!!” 🤍💍

I am beyond excited to spend the rest of my life dancing with my favorite person, cry-laughing at your silly jokes, being sung to at every show, feeling safe enough to be completely myself, and choosing each other every single day.

I have never experienced a love like this. From the moment our eyes met, I knew in my heart you were the one. You have become my safe place, my biggest cheerleader, and the only person who has ever truly understood me.

I love you more than all the multiverses combined, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of our lives looks like together💃🏼🕺🏼

I found the person who changed the soundtrack of my entire life.

Never did I think I’d be front and center at every show, my heart somehow beating faster every time he looked my way.

Never did I think someone could make my life feel so loud and so peaceful in the very same moment.

Never did I think I would find someone who would love me, accept me, and respect me exactly as I am.

Before David, my type was chaos. I thought love was supposed to hurt. I thought constantly questioning my worth was normal. I thought waiting for someone to change into the worst version of themselves was just part of loving them.

Then David walked into my life, and everything I thought I knew about love unraveled.

His voice somehow reached all the places that years of hurt had left cracked open. He stayed through the self sabotage, through the fear that one day he would flip a switch and become someone else.

But he never did.

Instead, he kept showing up. Patient. Kind. Honest. Always becoming a better version of himself, never a worse one.

Turns out, the greatest love story of my life didn’t come with fireworks.

It came with music.

And somehow, it made all the noise in my head finally sound like peace.

I giggled as I watched the sea gulls catching a ride with me on the ferry boat this morning.

There is an art to noticing. The choreography of the earth is always unfolding quietly around us… the tide moving in rhythm, birds gliding like they’re part of a perfectly timed performance, the way the light was carried through the clouds and reflected off the water.
