POSTS STORIES REELS

Get to know me in fives! ✨
I saw some people doing this and thought it would be a fun way to share some of the things I love that make me, me.

I know people put games instead of hobbies, but I haven’t been much of a gamer in recent years (besides Stardew Valley and Spiritfarer), so hobbies felt more fitting!

Also, it’s ridiculously hard to pick a top five of anything. I thought about this for days and even enlisted the help of my boyfriend and bestie to remind me what my favorite comfort things actually are lol.

Thanks for being here! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 by @mallys.nook

BOOK REVIEW!!! 🩸🦬
Does contain spoilers.

“What I am is the Indian who can’t die. I’m the worst dream America ever had.”

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones… ummmmm wow. It’s taken me some DAYS to process this book. This was a buddy read with @savschapter , and we loved it (we both listened to the audio).

I was blown away by the detail in this story. Admittedly, it initially left me frustrated. But once I really dove in, I was hooked and immersed in this dark, terrifying story. The first part is dense with prose, period language, and intense history. Once you lock in, it’s incredibly rewarding.

It’s not terrifying in the traditional horror sense. It’s horrific because these events actually happened (sans vampire), and SGJ masterfully weaves fiction with historical horrors.

The Pikuni language isn’t diluted for the reader, as it shouldn’t be, and it makes you slow down and really listen. SGJ doesn’t hold your hand or explain every unfamiliar term, adding so much depth. You’re forced to absorb every name, place, animal, and detail rather than passing over them. Honoring each word as you go.

My appreciation for this choice grew as I read, and I hold SGJ in reverence for it.

Spanning a century, the story begins in the modern day before taking us back 100 years as our character reads her great great great grandfathers journal. I loved how we moved between these two time periods at the beginning and close.

Exploring colonialism and genocide through the perspective of a white pastor and a Native American vampire was an incredible take. So was the idea of becoming what you eat. Good Stab is forced to eat his own people to remain Pikuni, which is powerfully dark.

I was also so delightfully confused by Good Stab’s nature and motivations, questioning who he was at his heart throughout the entire book.

But, no surprise here, the vampire isn’t the monster. It’s the priest sitting across from him.

“This, I believe, is the story of America, told in a forgotten church in the hinterlands, with a choir of the dead mutely witnessing.”

✨ Pochita pumpkin ✨

Maybe my favorite pumpkin I’ve ever carved. I made this one a few years back but it deserves a spot on the feed 🎃🫶🏻

What a book. I can’t believe I waited this long to read East of Eden.
I absolutely loved it and I can’t wait to see what they did with the adaptation. I’ll do a more thoughtful review later as I gather my thoughts on this saga. 🫶🏻 by @mallys.nook
