@maloney_makes BAP selected artist for 'Altered States' Exhibition for @photofringe 2026 at @gallery19a

Rachel Maloney’s practice combines experimental analogue photography and filmmaking with the investigation of domestic artefacts and family archives to explore how personal histories, particularly those of women, can be reimagined and retold. Her work explores memory, materiality, and intergenerational storytelling.

Traces (2026) is a series of prints made from a single object – a scarf that belonged to her grandmother. The images are Photograms made in the colour darkroom. The scarf placed directly on the light sensitive surface of the darkroom paper creates a strange shift in colour resulting in bright luminous looking forms that emerge from the deep black of the exposed paper.

The scarf becomes a trace of itself, an abstracted and repeated form with slight shifts of movement and colour, a process that is reminiscent of the distortion that happens within memory. This repetitive action echoes the shifts, mistakes and embellishments that occur in memory, as we try to recall, remember and make present a person, place or object from the past.

Revisiting some work in progress... Colour darkroom photograms of a scarf that belonged to my Nan.

It was part of the work I made alongside a short film 'The Jewellery Box' that was made in 2024, shot on 16mm 🤘🎥.

Do you think the images can work as part of a series on their own...separate to the film piece...?

I am currently exploring ways of transforming personal artefacts and everyday objects into analogue prints or film footage. I am playing and daydreaming, trying to tell stories through the things we keep and the objects we give value to (or not).

A scarf that someone once wore that has outlived her, and a print I made of it that will outlive me.

Artemisia Gentileschi
Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria (made 1615-17).

Currently in love with this painting (on display in the National Gallery in London).

Artemisia Gentileschi, born in Rome in 1593, is one of the most celebrated female painters of the 17th century.

Catherine of Alexandria was a Christian Saint martyred in the 4th century when she was around 18 years old by the ruling Roman Emperor Maxentius. She was sentenced to death by Breaking Wheel, a spiked wooden wheel used as an instrument of torture and execution from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. This spiked wheel 🛞 can be seen in the painting by Gentileschi, who herself was tortured at the age of 17.

Legend has it that on being touched by Catherine of Alexandria, the Breaking Wheel shattered into pieces, so she was beheaded instead. This is where the phrase 'Catherine Wheel' originated. According to the legend, instead of blood, a milk like substance flowed from Catherine's wounds.

Look this up to find out more, I'm paraphrasing from Wikipedia and various gallery and art websites. It's amazing what a rabbit hole one painting can send you down 🐇 🕳️ ❤️ by @maloney_makes

We are obsessed with you (2025).
