Today 12 yrs ago I got sober. My first year sober I performed for the first time at Berghain w/ Robyn. I had never been and always imagined my first Berghain experience to be on XTC raving for 2 days straight. See I was THE party girl. That was my identity for so long. I wanted to be out all night every night. And then here I am my first time in Berlin , first time at Berghain and newly SOBER! I was so scared of relapsing. Scared Of being alone. Scared Of sucking on stage. Scared Of no longer being The fun Party Girl, & now god forbid being The Boring Girl @ the party. I hid back stage, drank red bulls and bit my finger nails down til it hurt. And prayed to the God of All Raves to keep me safe, sane and still sober. So i'm backstage silently freaking out when the most gorgeous Drag Queen ever with like a Southern Drawl comes up to me and basically says " Honey , you look scared what's going on? Why are you sitting here all alone?" Something about her made me feel comfortable to tell her i was newly sober and nervous. and she said " Baby I have 15 yrs sober you're in good hands with me!" The God of Raves came through! I had an amazing show, I danced all night and realized I can still be fun without the additives. See we don't do this alone. Sober folks are everywhere. We're the Drag Queens & CEOS. The Bouncers , The Strippers, Your Therapist and Nurses. We run magazines, hotels and clothing brands. We run shit. Sober folks are all around like little ex crack head fairies 🧚 ready and willing to help. To the Drag Queen who saved me that day ,if you ever see this post Thank You Sis for my Sobriety. ❤️ by @malucamala

Happy Anniversary to “NYC Baby” !! This month marks the 6 yr anniversary to my iconic love song to New York City.

I grew up sticking to my grandmother’s plastic covered sofa , with the soundtrack of sirens, the Mr. Softee truck, and the piragua man calling out on hot days. Kids playing outside in the POMPA; The “ghetto waterfall.” Beepers & Freestyle music.

These were the sounds of my youth - Messy, beautiful, & unforgettable. I wanted to capture all of it in a song, in a love letter to the city that raised me.

Because my most favoritest thing in the whole wide world is summers in New York City. There is nothing like it!!

I feel so blessed to have grown up in all this beauty, culture, diversity, and chaos. My ode. My love song. My NYC Baby

I’ve been going back to Santo Domingo for the past couple of months. I hadn’t been back since 2015, when I did a music project with kids from the bateyes.

Being back has felt like a real homecoming. It’s nothing like the DR I remember. So much has changed. It feels modern, and yet its cultural DNA is still completely intact.

I remember performing here years ago and feeling the beginning of a movement either the newer generation. Seeing the fruits of that now has been amazing. I LOVE IT.

And it got me thinking...

I’m single. I don’t have kids. What exactly is keeping me tethered to this idea of the “American dream” anyway? This constant chase for more, bigger, better, busier, as if that’s the only way to measure whether you’ve made it.

There’s a big beautiful world out there where your worth isn’t attached only to what you’ve accomplished, where life can be slower and fuller at the same time, and where prosperity can mean something entirely different.

So now I’m like... wait. Maybe I should just move to DR.? 🇩🇴 taken in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic by @malucamala
