“Why would any little black girl play squash if there’s no one up there representing her?”

For Melissa Alves, representation is not an abstract conversation. She has regularly entered clubs where nobody else looked like her and has seen how access to the sport can still be shaped by geography, money and culture.

Her argument is simple: people are more likely to imagine themselves in a sport when they can see someone like them succeeding within it.

In the full Squash Player Podcast, Melissa discusses race, representation, urban squash and what competing at LA28 could mean for young black and Caribbean players. by @malves973

Summer was fun. Work was serious. 😎☀️

New place. New setup. New season.
Same mindset: get better.

A lot changed. The goal didn’t.

Today, we stop preparing.

Melissa Alves did not grow up dreaming of becoming a professional squash player.

She studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania and planned to build a career on Wall Street.

Then she discovered what that life might actually involve.

“Eighty hours a week? Nope. I’m not giving my soul.”

Professional squash suddenly appeared to offer the more sensible option.

Sometimes another person’s success does more than inspire you.

It forces you to reconsider your own choices.

While studying at Penn, Melissa Alves attended the US Open and watched former junior rivals competing among the world’s best players.

She had once been every bit as competitive with them. Now they were inside the world’s top 20, while Melissa was preparing for a career outside the sport.

“Maybe I’d missed something.”

It became the moment that changed the direction of her life. Full interview on the Squash Player Podcast - on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts by @malves973

At just eight years old, Melissa Alves was flying 9 hours - crossing the Atlantic - just to play a squash match!

From French Guiana, she would fly to Paris before continuing across France to compete in the national championships - arriving a week early to recover from the jet lag.

It was simply what pursuing squash required.

Melissa tells the full story of her unlikely journey from Kourou to the professional tour on the latest episode of the Squash Player Podcast.
