VOICES FROM ORUS

Service hits different when you see the need, listen to the community, and walk alongside them. Our journey to Orus wasn’t just about numbers or kilometres, it was about perspective.

Here are a few reflections from our members who made the trip north—unfiltered, straight from their hearts.

In Rotary, impact isn’t just what we deliver, it’s also what we carry back with us.

Orus Diaries | Part Three – Reflections & Resolve

After 500+ kilometres, rugged roads, laughter, and lessons, our needs assessment in Orus, Tiaty came to a close. We carried back not just dust on our boots, but stories, voices, and a renewed commitment to service.

🔑 Highlights from the journey:

• Mission with a Purpose: Rotary listens first because community-driven solutions matter most.
• The Road to Orus: breathtaking, unforgiving, unforgettable.
• Faces of Hope: men, women, youth, and expectant mothers trusting Rotary to walk with them.
• Education Reality Check: Orus Primary’s 3-classroom, 6-grade reality.
• Life-Saving Donations: medical equipment and food relief delivered.
• Partnership Power: deep gratitude to @mycredit_ltd for their immense support.
• Rotary Spirit: resilience, unity, and joy in service.

We left with full hearts and stronger resolve that when Rotary shows up, communities are not just supported, they are empowered.

Orus Diaries | Day Two – Part 2 - Support & Impact

We delivered the following:-
• Medical equipment: delivery bed, delivery sets, fridge, pedal bins, baby & adult weighing scales, thermometer, stethoscope, medicine trolley, stitching pack, mackintosh, gumboots, etc.

• Food relief: 10 bags of maize for hunger support.

We toured the Orus health facility which revealed the challenges and urgency of maternal & child care.

At Orus Primary, three classrooms hold two grades each, blackboards back-to-back, a few desks, and countless dreams. The spirit of learning is alive despite the odds. Here too, we left supplies.

This was the heart of President Mwende’s promise: impactful, sustainable projects under United for Good. Orus is only the beginning, but it’s proof that when Rotary shows up, hope grows.

As the rains fell on our way back, the Overlander powered on, carrying us to Ol Kalou for rest and reflection. The day was long, but the impact unforgettable.

Orus Diaries | Day Two – Part 1 - Listening & Learning

Service starts with listening. Our day began with a literal roadblock when murram piles stopped us in our tracks. Twenty minutes later, a grader cleared the way, reminding us that impact often means waiting, adapting, and pressing forward.

In Orus, we sat down with the community, men, women, expectant mothers, youth, Community Health Promoters, religious leaders, and local administration. Their voices shaped the foundation of what will become a Global Grant project under the Maternal & Child Health (MCH) focus area.

This aligns with the clubs vision of high-quality, people-centred projects which involves listening first, then acting.

Orus Diaries | Day One – The Journey North

On Friday 26th September, our team of 17 (16 Rotarians + 1 Friend of Rotary) set out in an Overlander at dawn, while Nairobi was still half asleep. The road ahead stretched over 500km, and with it, the promise of purpose.

🎯 Objective: To carry out a Needs Assessment in Orus, East Pokot, laying the foundation for a Global Grant under Rotary’s pillar of Maternal & Child Health (MCH).

🌍 Goal: To ensure our interventions are valid, people-centred, and truly responsive to the heartbeat of this community.

The journey itself became part of the story:
☕ Coffee break in Naivasha
🌊 Scenic pause at Thomson’s Falls
🥩 Nyama choma in Rumuruti
🛣️ Then the wild roads of East Pokot—dusty, rugged, endless.

At 6:30 pm we arrived at Tangulbei, we knew the road was long, the terrain demanding, but the mission greater still. This was the first step in shaping sustainable, people-centred solutions for safe motherhood in Orus.

We were welcomed very warmly and our first session was about introduction. The people of Orus who hosted us at the Mama center introduced themselves and the team from @rcngongroad introduced themselves.

We explained why we came to visit them and they were welcoming.

The journey was long, the road ended but we maintained high spirits.

Big up to the #FriendsofMamaCBO who have of their time, skills and resources to make everything a success.

One of the things we needed at the center was a fence.

When we had our first chance to talk about #MamaCBO and the work we are doing, a friend of #Mama from the @rcngongroad donated funds for the fence.

We got a chance to see it erected in our needs assessment visit.

We are Grateful
