🌈GOODBYE, LADY O🌈 I am so grateful for the bonus days I got with her this weekend after the big scare. The seizures did damage to her enlarged heart and she passed away in my arms Sunday morning.

Our world revolved around our "Weedog". My kids and I are absolutely crushed without her. People used to joke about how soft the pads of her feet were, because they rarely touched the floor! We told her dozens of times a day how much we loved her. We told her daily how pretty she was, and how much she meant to us. We spent so much time snuggling her and kissing on her, that outside family members would sometimes grumble and say "my gosh can you put her down for a little bit??".

Lady O knew she was the princess of our family. We told her, we showed her, we constantly proved it. The moment we got home from errands or events, we often dropped everything in our hands by the door and raced to see who could pick her up for snuggles first. We were OBSESSED.

There is a 3.5 pound hole in our hearts and our home. She absolutely rescued my sanity after Mama Nutmeg passed. This is the WORST part of loving and adopting senior pets---we give them our all but there's just never enough time.

There has been so much trauma and upheaval in my life the past 2 weeks, but I'm still standing. I'm exhausted and questioning everything, but I'm here. And I'll be here tomorrow. And every day after that.

But not gonna lie. Right now it feels really empty without my organization and my Lady O.

Introducing The Mama Nutmeg Foundation 🐾🍁🧡... where second chances shine brighter. 🌟

We are proud to introduce The Mama Nutmeg Foundation, dedicated to giving senior dogs the love, care, and dignity they deserve in their golden years.

This journey started with the founder, April Plemons, an animal advocate whose heart has always been drawn to the most overlooked and vulnerable pets. April has spent years working in animal rescue, starting as an animal shelter volunteer in 2007 and growing to run a senior dog rescue until 2025. Mama Nutmeg, a senior chihuahua who was a "foster fail", came from a Texas shelter with 20 other senior chis. She spent her golden years with April, and is deeply missed to this day.

Time and time again, April saw dogs like Nutmeg abandoned simply because of their age. Determined to change that, she has now founded the organization in Nutmeg's honor—to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome senior dogs who deserve to spend their final years safe, cherished, and valued.

Our Nonprofit Mission:
Inspired by Mama Nutmeg’s legacy, we advocate for senior dogs by rescuing them from shelters or unsafe situations, funding their medical care and rehabilitation, and advocating for and facilitating placement of them in with loving forever homes that recognize their worth.

🎉 CONGRATS, GERALD! 🎉 This adorable senior brindle chi came to us from a shelter, very afraid but very affectionate. He had terribly rotten teeth but otherwise was in good health. A couple of days before he was scheduled to leave for his new home, Gerald popped his hip out of socket! We have no idea how it happened with just a 5 pound pup, but it was incredibly painful. Thankfully, it didn't require surgery to fix, and once he was sedated to have it popped back in (with some crate rest), he was good as new.

And now he finally was able to be transported from our foster home in Texas to his new forever home in Washington. He's already got them falling in love and settling right in. We are so happy for you little buddy!! Cheers to forever, and we can't wait to see you in all your little sweaters!! 🥰 by @mama.nutmeg

🎉 CONGRATS, BEAUX! 🎉 This senior Yorkie was brought in with another senior Yorkie, and he is the first to get a forever home! He was the bigger of the two, and he was SUPER sweet and affectionate. We love to see him go from shelter, to rescue, to a loving home! This is why we do what we do! YAYYYY for adopting seniors!! by @mama.nutmeg

🎉 CONGRATS, GENE SIMMONS! 🎉 Our adorable senior jawless poodle is adopted!! He was found running the streets of Huntsville for weeks before he could get caught, but was finally trapped at a homeless encampment and sent to our rescue. After he got all his medical care, he was officially cleared to fly from Texas to Pennsylvania to be with his new family. We are so excited for him!

Shout-out to all the volunteers who made this tongue-out transport possible: transporter Ray, transport coordinator Kellye, flight angel Tracy, flight coordinator Andria, the adopters, our corporate charity partner @southwestair, and our amazing transport partners @swatt_transport. We couldn't do this without y'all!!!

😭 POOR BABIES!! 😭 Meet our two newest little seniors, Jasper and Claire. They come to us from the shelter after their owner was killed. They are estimated to be 7-8 years old and (at this early time) appear to be bonded. Jasper, the black one at 10 pounds, is the more nervous one who is clinging to Claire, the 7 pound tan one. They both are very loving and have been VERY well cared for. However, at this time, we want them to be adopted together.

I know adopting seniors is harder than adults and puppies. Add to that they are a presumed bonded pair, which makes it double hard. And add the third fact that black dogs are often the last to get adopted, and you've got a triple whammy. 😮‍💨

But.... We are still going to try our absolute best because they DESERVE this, after all they have just gone through. We have nationwide transport, so we can get these babies to the nearest major city to adopters. Is there ANYONE out there who can open their heart and home to this barely-a-senior pair?

Our rescue is located in Texas, but nationwide transport is available!

🎉 CONGRATS, LACI! 🎉 This adorable senior fluff came to us with Laci, after losing their owner. The girls quickly settled into foster life, and they finally were able to get adopted. Laci was deaf, but otherwise was just a loveable senior girl. She's made herself at home with her new family, and has even become quite the little beach babe!! Congrats, Laci!

🎉 CONGRATS, MIMI!! 🎉 This silly senior shih tzu mix came to us from a cruelty seizure, thin, severely matted, and distrustful of ALL humans. Thanks to lots of love and support in her foster home, she's healthy, well socialized and officially adopted. She took a flight from Texas to Florida to be with her new parents, and she's already fitting right in!!!

🎉 CONGRATS, LILY! 🎉 This adorable Cavalier mix has officially made it to her forever home!! She made the trip from Texas to Washington to be with her new family, and she has settled right in. Lily came to us with one other senior pup (adoption pending) and both have made a fabulous recovery. We are so happy to see the girls feeling happy, healthy, and ready for their next chapter.

💛 MEET MYRTLE. 💛 This 3.5 pound, 3 legged, 2 toothed, senior Yorkie arrived to our rescue this week. She and another Yorkie were found as strays but nobody ever came to claim them. Myrtle would love to be carried around 24/7 and be someone's princess. She's a good sport when it comes to being dressed up and does well with other dogs.

She's basically perfect! She gets her spay, bloodwork, and medical care soon, then she can go to a forever home. For now, help us welcome this new little lady! by @mama.nutmeg

💛 MEET JOLENE 💛 This beautiful senior girl was found as a stray out fending for herself. She was severely emaciated and very weak, but thanks to a good Sam, they got her immediate vet care and lots of groceries. Once she was well enough, they sent her to us in Bryan.

This girl is aging backwards, I swear!! You wouldn't even recognize her as the same girl!! She trots and gallops and is happy to be loved. Jolene doesn't look or act like a senior anymore!! You can tell she was made to have many litters, but those days are O V E R. She is booked for her spay this Monday, then when she recovers, she can get adopted. Welcome to the rescue, Jolene!!!
