Beautiful bodies are easier on the eyes than the true images that we see reflected back at us during and after active cancer treatment. The reality is, breast cancer is not always about beautiful bodies.

These pill bottles are the aftermath for some individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. Not all breast cancers are the same. Not all breast cancer survivors will be on a pill for an additional 5-10 years after active treatment ends.

These pills are a daily reminder of what we have been through. And the potential for what we could still face in the future.

This pill portrait is my portrait. It’s my contribution to the avalanche of pink ribbon messaging coming your way this month.

For me, breast cancer is not pink.

And for those of us who were amputated after a cancer diagnosis, in order to save our lives, the imagery of boobs is not always comforting.

What’s comforting is feeling in control of my health. Cancer made me feel OUT of control. And the best way to be in control of your own health is to get to know your body, and continue to #prioritizeyourhealth

Why does the image of a boob need to be a part of breast cancer awareness? Are there images of prostates, colons, thyroids being turned into apparel or replicated on a cupcake?

Is it just that topics that have imagery that are eye catching are more effective in grabbing someone’s attention? Speaking volumes without words - just images?

I had breast cancer and as a thriver I am not a big fan of the breast cancer imagery associated with the month of October. I created mammogram telegram to offer up a way to continue the conversation around breast health and scheduling your mammogram without the standard imagery of boobs or pink ribbons.

I am all for supporting breast cancer awareness, education, research and action. I just do not require boobs or ribbons to inspire me.

What inspires you to #prioritizeyourhealth ?

Breast Cancer Awareness month can be a lot for someone who has been through breast cancer treatment. The stories that I once heard, I now FEEL.

Sometimes the stories are too much. I can’t take another one in. I can’t hear about another breast cancer diagnosis. But for me, it’s the stories, NOT the statistics that make me continue to focus on prioritizing my health.

I am not perfect by any means. There are still appointments I have been putting off for WAY too long because I was OVERWHELMED by the all of the appointments I had during my active cancer treatment, and continue to have to this day. But each time I hear another breast cancer story, it gives me a boost to remember, this is it. One life. Get those appointments on the calendar so you can keep waking up each and every day.

Schedule your mammogram.

Ask about your breast density.

Check in with your body every month.

Be familiar with how your chest looks AND feels so you know when something is off.

Breast Cancer Awareness month may be coming to a close, but the priority of your breast health should rise to the top every month of the year.

Real Talk - I had my oncology check up appointment this week and I REALLY did not want to go. I didn’t want to touch base. Talk boob health. Talk meds. Talk recurrence or statistics. And I definitely did not want to put on that pink gown. It’s a triggering change of attire Every. Single. Time.

My appointment is behind me now. And I can continue to focus on summer fun. But the beauty of the @mammogramtelegram mail that I sent to family and friends this year is that, it got into my head. And I know that the further I get from active cancer treatment the more I need to prioritize my health.

So yesterday I put some more appointments on the calendar for me. Do I want to go to more appointments? No. But have I put so many appointments off because of Covid and general appointment fatigue after cancer treatment?

Yes.

If you have been putting off your mammogram. Take a moment to schedule it. Get it on the calendar. Your annual gynecology exam? Get it on the calendar. Your dermatologist? Eye doctor? Dentist?

It has been four years since my diagnosis and my double mastectomy. Those of us in the community all choose our anniversaries and for me, as the years go by, the memories that continue to be super vivid are hearing ā€œyou have cancerā€ and the day my body was forever changed. The end of chemo is a pretty big one too.

Last year I processed these anniversaries with the design of the @mammogramtelegram and this year, I wrote a @mammogramtelegram to all of my friends and family. It was cathartic. It was healing. My friends and family helped me through the hardships I faced and continue to face. And now I am sending them each a bright, bold reminder to prioritize their health so they are around for a very long time.

Who would you send a
@mammogramtelegram to?

It's June 1st, did you #feelitonthefirst ? A mammogram is only one part of the puzzle that displays your health history and the road ahead. Mammograms can lead to detours and forks in the road. They can also just be a pit stop as you continue on your way.

Don’t forget to #feelitonthefirst every month between your mammogram or well-woman appointments.

I had a support network of people who "got it" when I was going through breast cancer treatment. It was critical to my mental health. May is #mentalhealthawarenessmonth and when your mammogram leads to an explosion of cancer appointments and feeling like life is upside down, I highly recommend a support network.

A mammogram appointment can feel so foreign, and different from other doctor appointments. If you cannot be there in person, let a friend or loved one know you are thinking of them. Good thoughts are always appreciated when it comes to mammograms.

The support you want and/or need throughout the mammogram process varies. After the appointment has been made, remember to reach out and let someone know what kind of support you need before the appointment takes place. Anxiety before an appointment can be hard to manage alone.

The beginning of the year is a time when many people pick up the phone, or hop online and schedule annual doctor appointments. Start 2023 off on a positive note - take the time to call and schedule your mammogram appointment and don’t forget your monthly self-exams to always make time to #prioritizeyourhealth
