What an amazing three days at @foe_mandelauniversity

Some conferences stand out not only because of the work, but because of the people you get to serve alongside. Grateful to be a Public Relations Officer in a space where I feel valued, appreciated, and part of something meaningful. 🤍

Under the theme of reconfiguring teacher education for a transformative future, the teacher Educatiok Symposium was a beautiful reminder of what we can achieve together.

An added highlight was meeting the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule. What a week!😁 by @mandelauniversity

Nelson Mandela University congratulates it’s 2010 honorary doctorate recipient, Dr Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it “has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 to Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law”.

It explained that the Nobel Peace Prize goes to a person “who with exceptional courage and integrity has led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order.

This year’s laureate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted”.

Judge Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass “are constants in a long career ... A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time”, said the Committee.

This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.

FEMINIST FRIDAY📚

Our read this week is Xhosa Masculinities and Manhood in South Africa: Exploring Disability, Embodiment and Identity by Dr Thoko Sipungu, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Nelson Mandela University.

The book examines how traditionally initiated Xhosa men with visible physical disabilities navigate manhood, cultural expectations and identity in rural Eastern Cape. By centring their lived experiences, Dr. Sipungu challenges dominant assumptions about masculinity and disability, offering an African-centred perspective on how the body, culture and social norms shape understandings of manhood.

Next Friday, 16 October, join us for the launch of Dr Sipungu’s book as we engage with his research and its contribution to scholarship on masculinities, disability and gender.

See you next Friday for another Feminist read🥳 taken in Nelson Mandela University by @mandelauniversity

PSET sector seeks stronger articulation pathways in agriculture

Altogether 58 key stakeholders from 15 institutions recently gathered at Nelson Mandela University to strengthen articulation pathways in the Eastern Cape’s agricultural education and training sector.

The University’s Centre for Integrated Post-School Education & Training (CIPSET), in collaboration with the Unfurling Post-School Education & Training (UPSET) Initiative and Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the Provincial Agriculture PSET Articulation Conference on the University’s Missionvale Campus.

The theme was “Learning for the Future: Pathways and Practices to Strengthen Articulation across the PSET System” and the two-day conference brought together Agricultural Colleges, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges, universities and sector stakeholders.

Opportunities for collaboration in articulation, lecturer development and student progression across the PSET system were explored.

The conference followed the launch of the University’s Articulation Hub in October 2024, which identified several challenges to implementing the National Articulation Policy across the Eastern Cape PSET sector.

These include fragmented implementation, limited cross-institutional pathways for agriculture-related qualifications, inconsistent credit recognition and limited student awareness of available articulation opportunities.
