Turbulent, enthralling & unforgettable.

Lim's characterisations & storytelling were absolutely magnificient.

The story she wove through generations & decades was palpable, poignant, achingly beautiful and tragically human.

This is historical fiction with magical realism set in 1940s China, 1950s Hong Kong, 1960s -1980s USA and back to Hong Kong in 1980.

Focuses on generational trauma, how fear keeps us locked up, how hiding ourselves from those we love keeps us from truly loving them the way they deserve and denies us of their love the same way.

Also highlights that often times we hold the key to heal our own suffering.

You'll find explorations of the complexities of mother-daughter relationships & the difficulties of navigating those.

This beautifully reflects on Cinderella. We learn about the Chinese version of Cinderella as well as a fresh new look at the "fairytale" from a completely different perspective & lens.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, one of my favourite books I have ever read....a physical copy will have to be mine in the future, this is a book i will hold dear to my heart for a long time to come.

BEHIND FIVE WILLOWS by June Hur eARC Review!

This was, without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve ever read. Words can’t properly convey just how much I loved this book.

I completely fell in love with the writing. The plot was extremely engaging, enthralling and entertaining.

As someone who loves Pride & Prejudice, I was very intrigued when I saw that this was a retelling set in the Joseon Dynasty era. June Hur did not only meet my high expectations but surpassed them greatly. This book has themes of Pride and Prejudice, some scenes parallel to the Jane Austen book but also just so much more.

Jane Austen focused on social commentary with feminist themes. June Hur also highlighted feminist themes (the fact that most women needed to marry in order to secure their futures, male privilege) and had social commentary (the class divide, financial & social privilege), but the main focus was political commentary. June Hur really deep dived into this particular King’s reign, the restrictive laws and social constructs that stifled women’s self-expression, autonomy & livelihoods.

Something that was also highlighted, that I found to be very imperative to understand, not just the political climate of the Joseon dynasty, but politics as a whole, is that people in power and those with immense privilege, never face the same consequences that those of lower socioeconomic standings face, for the same wrongdoings. It’s something that is still evident, up to today.

The major topics of this book were literacy, publishing, freedom of speech, the creation, distribution & consumption of fiction, and the vilification of reading for pleasure.

This book was nothing short of a love letter to novels.

This book reaffirmed my gratitude for novels, the writers who pour their hearts into them, and the means of being able to have access to them. What an honour it is to be able to read and own novels.

June Hur is a magnificent writer. I will be reading all of her previously published books, and I will also be reading whatever she writes in the future.
