I broke my back… but I don’t want to break my momentum. 😩 Turns out growing a mountain bike account is slightly harder when you’re not allowed to mountain bike 🤦‍♀️😂” After a crash in Morzine left me with a fractured back, I’ve got 3 months in a brace to look forward to. Being off the bike is hard. Anyone who rides knows that feeling… when your whole world revolves around chasing trails, planning adventures, pushing yourself, and then suddenly you’re told to stop. It’s a tough adjustment. I’m definitely finding it frustrating, but this injury has also reminded me how incredible the MTB community is. The messages, check-ins, encouragement, and support have been unreal. I’ve had so many lovely messages from family, friends and the MTB community checking in and asking how I’m doing, and I honestly can’t thank you all enough for the support, encouragement, and kind words. ❤️ The good news is the doctors are really happy with my scans. Everything looks stable, and it’s going to heal well with no complications expected. Huge relief! 🙌 I also can’t say enough about having an amazing friend like @bobwatmough who helped get me to the right doctors, made sure I got the care I needed, and got it done in record time. I honestly can’t thank him enough. 🙏 I might be in a back brace right now instead of on the trails, but I’m feeling incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such amazing people. Insta360 X5… I’m literally obsessed! ✨🫶 This definitely wasn’t the first Insta360 X5 video I imagined making… 😅 I pictured mountain tops, muddy trails, bike parks and epic POV footage. Instead… it’s an unboxing from a girl in a back brace. 😂 When Insta360 reached out, I genuinely couldn’t believe it. I’ve wanted an X5 for so long, so this was a proper pinch-me moment. Nobody really prepares you for this. 🩻❤️‍🩹 A few weeks ago I was feeling stronger than I’d ever been. Running, training in the gym, riding my bike whenever I could. Now my mornings start with putting on a back brace. I miss all of it. I miss going for a run. I miss those early morning gym sessions. But more than anything, I miss riding my bike. What’s making it even harder is knowing that right now I should be in Morzine, living my best life, chasing laps with friends, laughing on the lifts, and spending every day on the trails. Instead, I’m watching it all from home with a serious case of FOMO. Recovery isn’t how I imagined spending my summer, but it’s temporary. The mountains aren’t going anywhere, and neither am I. 💥🚨Crash Update – Part 5🚨💥 Three days later, I finally have my back brace. 🙌 It was fitted, I was discharged from the hospital, and for the first time in what felt like forever… I was standing again. I have to wear this brace day and night for the next 3 months, but being able to walk again after spending three days flat on my back felt incredible. I couldn’t sit up, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t even roll onto my side without the nurses shouting at me. Standing felt like getting a little piece of freedom back. Emotionally though… this has been the hardest part. I’m absolutely gutted. This holiday feels like it barely even started before it was over. All I want to do is ride my bike, session some amazing features, soak up the incredible atmosphere that the MTB community always brings, eat some amazing french food and swim across Lac Montriond. Instead, I’m heading home early with a back brace and a fractured spine. I’ll miss the rest of this trip. I’ll miss the summer riding season. Everything I’ve been looking forward to is going to have to wait until next year. That really hurts. But as disappointed as I am, I also know how lucky I am. It could have been so much worse. So now the focus changes. Recovery comes first. I’ll do everything I can to heal properly, stay positive, and come back stronger. The mountains aren’t going anywhere… and neither am I. 💕🚴‍♀️🤘 Thank you to everyone who’s messaged, checked in, and sent your support. It has genuinely meant the world to me. A special thank you to my amazing husband, @rob.keen . 🤍 From calling for help on the trail, to spending hours by my hospital bed, sorting out all the logistics, and cutting his own holiday short without a second thought… he’s been by my side every single step of the way. 💥🚨Crash Update – Part 4🚨💥 At the Avoriaz Medical Centre, they sent me straight for X-rays. The news wasn’t what I wanted to hear… I’d fractured my back. Because it involved my spine, the doctors wanted a clearer picture. X-rays could only tell them so much, so I was transferred by ambulance to the hospital in Thonon-les-Bains for a CT scan. The rest of the day was spent in the emergency department. No food. No water. Just waiting. Honestly, all I could think about was how desperately I wanted a drink of water. My mouth was so dry it felt like sandpaper. Late that night, I finally had my CT scan. The next morning, the doctor came in with some reassuring news. It appeared to be stable compression fractures, but because it was my spine, they still needed the neurosurgeon to review the scans before confirming the treatment plan. The diagnosis: compression fractures at T10 and T12. I was also measured for a custom back brace, which now had to be manufactured before I could begin the next stage of recovery. Hearing the words “you’ve fractured your spine” wasn’t exactly how I imagined ending a mountain biking holiday. 💥🚨Crash Update – Part 3🚨💥 Once I got my hands on the footage, it was time to play detective. 🕵️‍♀️🎥 Watching it back, I could finally see what happened. I jumped over the roots… but just a little too far to the right. Instead of landing on the centre of the trail, my front wheel came down on one rogue piece of wood. That innocent-looking bit of timber had one job… and apparently it was to eject me straight onto my bum and into a tree. Safe to say, that piece of wood and I are no longer friends. In fact, it can absolutely do one. 🌲🪵😂 Looking back, I keep asking myself… was I simply unlucky? Or did I just run out of talent for a split second? 🤔 Either way, the result was the same… and it was about to change the rest of my summer. 💥🚨Crash Update - Part 2🚨💥 I knew something wasn’t right. Not long after Rob called for help, the patrol medical crew arrived. They started assessing me and immediately became concerned when I said my back was sore... it could be a spinal injury. From that moment, everything slowed down. They told me not to move and called for an ambulance. Until it arrived, they kept me as still as possible, constantly checking how I was feeling and making sure I was okay. When the ambulance team got there, things became even more serious. They brought out the scoop stretcher, a vacuum mattress, and a spinal board to carefully immobilise me before transporting me off the mountain. Lying there, surrounded by medics, I couldn’t help but think… how did a crash on a blue trail end up like this? I was then taken to the Avoriaz Medical Centre, where I finally started to find out what had happened.
