Couple of concrete works in progress in the studio , it’s been a little bit cooler here so I have been working outside a little . (Although the heat does play havoc with the adhesive on my masking tapes which can be a bit of a trial ! ) Different sizes shown - first image 30cm x 30cm , second image 12cm x 12cm. I spent a glorious day today, in the heart of the Suffolk countryside at @spiritstudios_suffolk for the opening of ‘A Day in May’ and also managed to catch @andrew_gifford_artist ‘s wonderful exhibition ’City Lights part one’ which was in an adjacent gallery space. Andrew’s solo show of urban landscapes dates back to 2008 and features work he made in Morocco, Hong Kong, Chicago and Ramallah, capturing the wonderful light of twilight and dusk. A Day In May features 250 artists who responded to an open call by @auto_amor in collaboration with @johnmartingallery @spiritstudios_suffolk . Artists were invited to spend a single day in a landscape that matters to them and create an artwork in response. The work could be made en plein air or in the studio later. The exhibition is replete with stunning and unique pieces , all painted on the same gesso boards but with such a variety of techniques and paint application. I have included a small selection - and tagged the artists so you can see who made them . Huge thanks to @auto___amor @spiritstudios_suffolk @johnmartingallery and the judges for including my work, and for providing such a warm welcome today. Both exhibitions continue until 1st August. Much cooler (thankfully) today, starting my day with my usual morning constitutional. I’m really lucky to live in Sheffield, which is one of the most the verdant cities in Europe . As I was walking through nearby woods a doe jumped out right in front of my path, literally feet away - I couldn’t believe it . I’ve been walking /running these paths for 30 years and never seen one in broad daylight or so close, and this is just 10 minutes drive from the centre of the city. Back in the studio, more masking tape madness as I’ve got a few new concrete paintings on the go for upcoming exhibitions. I find this stage of drawing and laying the masking tapes down although fiddly, quite meditative too. It always feels like the tapes act like an armature for the future work, a bit like scaffolding would have been for the buildings they depict . #paintingonconcrete #parkhill #goldenlane #concreteseashelters #urbandeer taken in Sheffield by @mandypayne_97

This little painting on concrete (image 1) was made to celebrate 10 years of Saul Hay Gallery @saulhayfineart in Castlefield, Manchester for their upcoming ‘10 x 10’ exhibition. This wonderful gallery has been a big part of my life over the past decade, having exhibited there right from the start. Thanks to @saulhayfineart , I’ve taken part in many group shows, had a solo show and several outings to Manchester Contemporary and the London Art Fairs. I’m so grateful to Ian and Catherine for supporting and having faith in my work and for all the lovely connections I’ve made with fellow artists and clients over the years . This final exhibition will be a bit bitter sweet as sadly Saul Hay are moving from their beautiful gallery space to prepare for a bold new chapter, transitioning into a dynamic, mobile, and online art venture. The 10x10 exhibition features 104 artists, each creating a work measuring 10cm x 10cm to celebrate the gallery’s 10th anniversary. In a lovely, generous, collaborative gesture Ian asked 52 of his regular artists to invite another artist they like /admire to show alongside the other artists. It was a difficult decision for me as to who to choose, but I went for @rutheheaton , a wonderful painter who like me was a late starter to this art malarkey, with an NHS background . I’m delighted to have two little paintings in the AOAP Projects @aoapprojects / Royal Society of Artists Summer Show - ‘Illuminated’ “Illuminated is the first of these annual summer shows at the RSA, celebrating its history as a space for artists and thinkers to exchange ideas and shape the future. ‘Illuminated’ invites contemporary artists to respond to themes of Enlightenment, social value, and collective progress, the foundational principles upon which the RSA was established. It also evokes the light and optimism of summer, when this exhibition will take place. The works will be on view for sale at The Royal Society of Arts from the 10-23rd June, as well as being available for sale on the @aoap website. Well this is a bit random (and blink and you’ll miss it!) but I’ve got a few prints of my paintings in the new rom- com ‘Finding Emily’ which was released on Friday . Set in Manchester around the University, Rusholme, Castlefield and Salford it is a gentle, light hearted send up of campus culture . My prints feature in the chip shop scene set in Salford. Artist spotlight on Mandy Payne - ‘Reflections at Beton House’ (mixed media on concrete) Mandy is a Sheffield based painter/ printmaker whose work is inspired by urban landscape, particularly Brutalist architecture, social housing, and issues of gentrification. For her paintings she works with materials that have a direct physical connection to the sites she depicts, namely concrete and spray paint. For her prints she works largely in stone lithography. She recently had a painting in the Graves Gallery as part of their 'Place and Identity' display and has exhibited widely across the UK, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Mandy is a member of Contemporary British Painting group.' Bee Sting Cake curated by @swseanwilliams & @k8jacob1 is an exhibition of 19 Sheffield artists. The show runs until the 28th of May.
