Hi to so many new faces! Let me (re)introduce myself 🫶🏻

My name is Debbie, and I’m the founder & clinical director of The Manhattan Psychotherapy Collective.

I’m beyond passionate about mental health, wellness, and holistic care.

I started this page in 2022 with the intention of making mental health topics more accessible and relatable, and to shatter the idea that therapy has to be cold and overly clinical.

Throughout my growth as a clinician, I’ve honed my expertise at the intersection of anxiety and complex trauma in women, using approaches that keep you moving forward instead of hitting that inevitable plateau. I love talk therapy, and I love somatic work too.

Enter @manhattanpsychotherapy: a practice built on genuine relatability with specialized expertise, where you can feel truly comfortable with your therapist while trusting you’re getting high quality, empirically-supported care.

We look at the whoooole you, because we understand that mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

Thank you for being here! More grateful for this community than I can put into words!

Being independent can be empowering, but sometimes, it can also be a form of self-protection.

When you’ve learned that relying on others leads to disappointment, doing everything yourself can start to feel safer than asking for support.

But there’s a difference between choosing independence and feeling like you have no other option.

Healing doesn’t mean giving up your independence. It means learning that you can be capable on your own and allow others to show up for you. 🌻

The NYC Marathon, but make it therapy-coded 🏃‍♀️🧠

Whether you’re running 26.2 miles, learning to set boundaries, or working through your attachment patterns, we’re all making progress in our own ways.

And sometimes, the biggest milestones aren’t the ones with a finish line.

Emotional shutdown doesn’t always look like a breakdown. Sometimes, it looks like feeling disconnected, emotionally numb, or simply going through the motions.

Emotional shutdown can occur when the nervous system becomes overwhelmed by prolonged stress, emotional distress, or psychological demands.

It may present as withdrawal, difficulty expressing emotions, reduced emotional responsiveness, or a sense of disconnection from yourself and others.

While emotional shutdown can serve as a protective response to overwhelming experiences, recognizing these patterns is an important step toward developing emotional awareness and healthier coping strategies.

Understanding your emotional responses can help you recognize when your mind and body may be signaling a need for support. 🤍 by @manhattanpsychotherapy

Regulating your nervous system might just be its own version of winning the lottery. 🌟

When we learn to regulate our nervous system, we create more space to manage stress, process emotions, and respond to life’s challenges without constantly feeling overwhelmed.

It’s not about eliminating anxiety or avoiding difficult emotions. It’s about building the ability to move through them without staying stuck in a constant state of fight-or-flight.

Feeling more grounded, emotionally balanced, and connected to yourself? That’s a win worth celebrating. 🧘‍♀️

Rest shouldn’t feel like something you have to earn.
For many of us, slowing down can bring feelings of guilt, anxiety, or the pressure to constantly be productive. When we’re so accustomed to being on the go, moments of stillness can feel uncomfortable, leaving us questioning whether we’re doing enough.
🤍
But being unproductive doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. Rest is an essential part of maintaining your mental and emotional well-being, not a reward for completing everything on your to-do list.

Our clinician Isabelle explores the discomfort and anxiety that can come with slowing down and reminds us that our need for rest isn’t determined by how much we’ve accomplished. 💆‍♀️

Not all angels walk the runway. Some are making a difference one session at a time. ✨✨✨

Overthinking can keep your brain stuck in a loop, replaying the same worries without actually getting closer to a solution. The more we dwell on certain thoughts, the harder it can feel to find clarity or move forward.
🪷
Sometimes getting unstuck isn’t about thinking harder, but changing how we respond to our thoughts. Small shifts can help break the cycle and create space for a clearer mind. 🧠

There’s so much pressure to have it all figured out, especially in your early twenties and the years following graduation.
Between comparing timelines, chasing success, and trying to meet expectations, it’s easy to lose sight of what actually matters to you.
⭐️
Our clinician Raven reminds us that before focusing on becoming the best version of yourself, you first have to take the time to discover who that person is.

Success looks different for everyone, and finding your own path is part of the process. 🪴

Dinner plans sounded great when you first planned them… but how are you feeling now?

After a long week, it’s important to check in with your mind and body before automatically saying yes to another plan.

Sometimes we need rest, sometimes we need connection, and sometimes we need to recognize when we’re pushing ourselves out of obligation rather than genuine desire.
✨
Give yourself permission to slow down, reflect, support your well-being and maybe stay home that night. 💆‍♀️
