15 years since the final Beastie Boys album. 14 since MCA passed. A book and a stage show/film of the book but no lost sessions albums and no new music since make the gap feel even bigger.

So what brings Mike D back releasing music? Making it with his sons. It’s frenetic and joyous. Some Combat Rock-era Clash vibes (might just be me)

I may have jumped for joy when getting handed the signed print at Bear Tree.

Sex Pistols & Frank Carter / The Stranglers / The Undertones : Open Air Theatre, Scarborough

I didn’t think anything would top the chaos of the System gig anytime soon.

I was wrong.

The Undertones kicked things off with a set of more songs you know than you think you do, all played nice and tightly.

Then the Stranglers were up next and I came to the conclusion they’re a band I need to listen more to. Darkly edged and seriously impressive. The hits stood out Nice and Sleazy, Peaches, Golden Brown and No More Hero’s.

And then it was the headliners Sex Pistols & Frank Carter. And it was bedlam from the start. No much room@for surprises on the set list given it pulls mainly from Nevermind the Bollocks, still wasn’t expecting My Way.

Steve Jones guitar tone and volume, Glen Matlock thumping bass and Paul Cooks battering drumming. Frank Carter? Pure class. Doing every song justice without turning in a parody of a vocal performance and talk about energy.

Lost Ada to the women only mosh pit with great pride.

System of a Down, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

23 years since last seeing them. No new album to dilute the set list. 29 tracks. Banger after banger of beautiful bouncing mayhem.

Superb.

Garbage & Skunk Anansie, Open Air Theatre Scarbrough

Could a co-headline gig be more right? I don’t think so. Caught half of openers Du Blonde set and wish we’d caught it all. Two new fans here.

Garbage opened with a few of the new songs which whilst they don’t hit the memory button like the classics they are great songs. Shirley stalking the stage throughout. Stupid Girl starts a run of classics from the first two albums. It’s All Over but the Crying was an absolute show stopper. Hard set for anyone to follow.

Skunk Anansie aren’t anyone though and with the staple Charlie Big Potatoe opener they’ve soon got the now filled out crowed absolutely bouncing. New songs interspersed with the classics once again. Got the small one in front of Skin when she came into the crowd and she got a “hello”. Great to see drummer Mark back especially at a hometown gig for him.

Epic.

It’s an 80s version of Mouse Trap time at the Grandparents.

Two observations:

1) Have they changed the “Your mouse is tipsy” square in newer versions?

2) It’s all pretty good fun until three of you are going round in circles on the last six spaces waiting for one of you to land on the cheese and another to land on “turn the crank”. FOR HOURS

A huge thank you for all the birthday wishes yesterday. I was working but had a lovely family meal out in the evening and then went adventuring to Les Castleford with Rae today. 😀 by @manicstreetmini

No Mans Sky: Journeys 65daysofstatic / Paul Weir

The usual conversation when a record turns up in the post starts with me saying “I ordered it months ago.” In this case it was last September. Worth the wait though.

A follow up/expansion to the No Man’s Sky OST turning soundscapes created by 65daysofstatic and Paul Weir into songs and sequencing them as an album, as a journey.

Laced records have knocked it out the park with the blue and black galaxy press which plays and sounds fantastic.

I should probably actually give No Mam’s Sky a play at some point.

Final morning hunting Dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum.

Also included the fastest km I’ve run in years when Meg realised she’d left her bag at the museum as we were about to step onto the tube.
