“Arrived”
Oil on Canvas
12” x 16”

We made it kid!!!
We’re here ! And it’s so much more greener than you could’ve imagined. We’re still just as stubborn this time with a beard. Your witty tongue is just as sharp, and your curious little eyes still have that special little spark. I got you tattoos like you’ve always wanted. I got you clothes that you’ve waited so long to wear. We eat food everyday now, even ice cream sometimes! (Yes! weally!). We still make those viridian paintings, we still play the violin. But don’t worry though, he doesn’t touch you anymore, he will never lay his hands on you again. Neither will I. You’ve had experiences you couldn’t have dreamt of. You have love, you have power, and most importantly you have yourself. This time as a blessing not a burden. I’m sorry I was too hard on you half our life. I’m more gentle with you now. We don’t beg for love anymore. We spread it. Sometimes to people that didn’t deserve it. But like you’ve always said kiddo, “love always finds its way back to you.” And it really does. We found home, it was us all along! and after all this time, we finally “Arrived”.

I haven’t really done self portraits up until recently, but this one is so special to me. Becoming a conduit myself to express something feels a lot more personal and a lot more intimate and raw which I wanted to achieve in this piece. As a kid I never thought I’d grow up to be an adult. I never thought I’d live past my 18th birthday, let alone a day more. When you’re thinking of survival, the future is a privilege.

Here’s the process of “Arrived”. This is honestly the fastest I’ve ever painted. I finished this in about 20 days of painting, with time in between for each layer to dry of course. (Which was super quick thanks to the fast drying medium I used.)

When you’re thinking of survival, the future is a privilege, a luxury, a dream, nothing more than a fantasy. But being here today, In my 19 year old body, feels so surreal sometimes. I feel like I’m gonna be woken up any second and go back to my 13 year old life. Just being here, existing means so much to me. I wanted to capture the feeling of being disconnected to your own body because you never thought you’d have it for this long. I never thought I’d get to paint my 19 year old self because I never thought I’d be 19. But painting this, is a reminder for me and everyone else, that holding on is worth it.

“Washing him off me “
Oil on Canvas
12” x 16”

I still remember how cold the water felt,
With every scrub I felt nothing but dirtier.
how powerless I felt,
How suffocated how felt in my own body,
This body will never truly belong to me again,
There will always be a part of you clawing inside of me.
What temple is this body
If it was raided with such ease ?
What God do I turn to?
What prayers do I utter?
So I washed and washed until the sun came up,
Only this time
there was no light or warmth.

This was also super difficult to paint emotionally. I had multiple breakdowns while painting this and kept painting with teary eyes. I felt shame in my gut but strength in my brushes. I believe vulnerability is strength. Capturing something so raw makes me feel so incredibly powerless. But as I kept painting, I found strength and healing in my powerlessness. With every stroke I let go a little more. I wanted to capture the feeling of helplessness, vulnerability and devastation. Sometimes laying your heart out to the world is art itself. Taking off your armour in a world full of beasts is true power and freedom. And for once in my god forsaken life, I’m free.

This was one overwhelming piece that I’m so glad I painted. I usually love when people resonate with my art, but the truth is, I never want people to remotely relate or resonate to this. But if you do, you’re not alone. <3

This exercise always humbles me 🙏

My second time doing this and I did way better than the first. Lots of things I learned to NOT DO and I’m SO doing this again.

Should I make more of these ?

How to prime a canvas for oil painting :

Step 1 : clean the canvas with a damp cloth.
Step 2 : Mix gesso with some water and apply it on the canvas. (use more gesso and less water if the canvas is very uneven or not primed.)
Step 3: Wait for at least 2 hours after the gesso dries and use sandpaper to sand it down.
Step 4: Wipe with a damp cloth to remove excess flakes.
Step 5: Wait 24 hours before starting your painting

A little acrylic study I did a while back which I forgot to post.

I’ve never really painted with acrylics before and honestly not a big fan of the fast drying time but I wanted to try to understand the medium a bit better. However, I appreciate how convenient they are especially when you’re limited with your art supplies.

Rest assured, I’ll be sticking to oils thank you very much lol.

Here’s the process of “Washing him off me “. This was super difficult to paint because I kinda started it 10 days before leaving for college and well I had to finish it before I left. Which meant painting for 5-6 hours per session each day to try to finish this (while also working on other projects) and I’m so glad I did. Thankfully, the layers ended up drying in time and I could finish it before I left.

My favourite art books ! These have exponentially changed the way I look at art and the world in general. Also yes some of them do have paint on them because I’m a busy little multi tasking thing hehe
