Papi Momoy, Words can’t describe the pain I’m feeling. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. Losing you has been the most difficult thing I’ve ever gone through, and I wish it was all just a dream. You are no longer suffering. ALS may have taken your ability to walk, talk, and breathe, but it never took your strength or your dignity. Thank you, Papi, for everything I have in life, especially the best mother and sisters anyone could ever ask for. Thank you for teaching me how to be a good husband and father. Thank you for teaching me how to be strong. This year has been difficult, but you fought and fought for us. Papi, you were strong for us through it all. Now it’s our turn to be strong for you. The first three photos are from November 2024, while the last three are from this year. In August of this year my family received heartbreaking news that my dad has ALS. ALS, a motor neuron disease, destroys the neurons responsible for transmitting messages from the brain to the muscles. When these neurons cease functioning, the muscles weaken and atrophy. This disease severely impacts a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, and breathe, all while their mental state remains intact. It’s a fatal and progressive disease without a cure. This year has been long and challenging. Currently, my dad relies solely on a ventilator and has a feeding tube. He can no longer walk, move, or eat by mouth. However, with the assistance of Northwestern Memorial, Shirley Ryan, and the Les Turner ALS Foundation, we managed to bring him home. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without my sister Cecilia, who has become his full-time caregiver. Despite his condition, my dad has remained resilient. He has faced this undeniable challenge with the same determination and strength he has always shown us. My dad is my hero, and witnessing his current state has been incredibly difficult. I’ve been struggling with this situation and often don’t know how to feel. I frequently ask myself why him. He’s a person who never complains or asks for anything. He’s always given and worked his entire life to improve his children’s lives. On my profile, there’s a link to a GoFundMe that my niece set up.
