POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I made my first intro post on here 6 years ago, and a lot has happened since then. I’ve worked in BC, worked virtually, spent the last couple years working as a physio in the US, and now I’m back home treating in person in BC again.

I love working with people who want to stay active, get stronger, get back to the gym, running or sport, or just feel better doing their everyday things. I also have a big interest in women’s health, pregnancy + postpartum, pelvic health, and helping people feel more confident with exercise and building strength for the long term.

I’m now accepting new patients at Catalyst Kinetics in New Westminster!

So if you’ve had something bothering you, you’re trying to get back to something, or you’ve just been putting off getting it looked at, come see me!

Just because something is trending in fitness doesn’t mean it’s good advice

1. Making every workout about burning calories
There’s so much more to exercise than how many calories you burn. Building muscle, improving your cardiovascular health, keeping your bones strong and just feeling good are all reasons to move your body.

2. Treating Pilates as a replacement for strength training

I love Pilates and teach it myself, but I wouldn’t rely on it alone if your goal is to build strength and muscle. Progressive resistance training is important, especially for bone health as we get older. You can do both!

3. Normalizing leaking during workouts

Just because leaking when you run, jump or lift is common doesn’t mean it’s something you have to live with. And doing more Kegels isn’t always the answer either.

4. Thinking lifting heavy will make you bulky

I wish more women weren’t afraid of lifting heavier weights. Building significant muscle takes a lot more time and effort than people think, and maintaining muscle and strength becomes increasingly important as we age.

5. Thinking you need to train differently during every phase of your menstrual cycle

There’s not enough good evidence to say everyone needs to change their workouts based on what phase of their cycle they’re in. If you’re feeling tired, crampy or just not your best, absolutely adjust your training. But you don’t need to follow a completely different workout plan every week.

6. The “snatched waist” workout trend

You can’t choose where your body loses fat, no matter how many ab exercises you do. Core workouts are great for building strength, but they’re not going to specifically burn fat around your waist.

Not saying any of these workouts are bad. I just think some of the advice being pushed online needs a little more context.

Do you guys agree or disagree 🤔 taken in Vancouver, British Columbia by @mannyphysio

A few things I wish more people knew about physio:

1. You don’t need to wait until something is really bad to get it looked at. Sometimes it’s easier to address something when it’s just starting to interfere with your workouts or everyday activities.

2. Rest isn’t always the answer. A lot of the time, we can find ways to modify what you’re doing rather than stopping altogether.

3. Physio shouldn’t just be about getting rid of pain. If your goal is to get back to running, lifting, playing sports or whatever else you enjoy, your rehab should actually prepare you for that.

4. Exercises should progress as you get stronger. Doing the same three exercises forever probably isn’t going to get you very far.

5. The goal isn’t to have you coming to physio forever. It’s to give you the tools and confidence to manage things on your own. taken in New Westminster, British Columbia by @mannyphysio

1. US healthcare seems a lot more regulated

2. insurance companies are involved in basically everything

3. reimbursement and patient care models are look very different in the US

4. family doctors are way more involved in the rehab process

5. i see way more post-op patients in the US because surgeries seem to happen much quicker and more frequently

6. saying “physio” immediately exposes me as canadian

7. the US system can feel way more efficient in some ways and way more complicated in others

every healthcare system has tradeoffs, you just notice different ones depending where you work by @mannyphysio
