Works from 2005 while I served as a faculty in the Department of Painting at the esteemed College of Fine Arts Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. Those were days when I reconnected with my alma mater and reorganized my practice, infusing my personal quests with the daily conversations, about art and life, trying to arrive at a language that may not be individual but sincere and metaphorical in content. My interactions with the model Chellappan brought me to certain insights about the meaninglessness of life in general, about the injustices often taken for granted, and above all about the paradox of the proportions we perceive life from our own perculiar point of views. by @manojvyloor

Manoj Vyloor’s recent paintings turn inward, transforming the landscape into a psychological terrain where dreams, anxieties, memories, loneliness, conflict, and alienation converge. Here, nature becomes a mirror of the artist’s inner life, denoted by a shifting space shaped by doubt, aspiration, vulnerability, and the search for an authentic visual language.

Placing himself at the centre of this journey, Vyloor’s solitary figure confronts not simply the vastness of the landscape, but the uncertainties of artistic becoming. In contrast to Caspar David Friedrich’s romantic wanderer, his figure faces an inner abyss: the struggle to understand oneself, to find meaning, and to discover what painting can still become.

The burning coconut palm becomes an image of the mind consumed by desire, anxiety, memory, and creative intensity that are rooted yet aflame. In the distance, lightning pierces the darkness like a sudden flash of thought, revelation, fear, or inspiration.

These landscapes are ultimately not about place, but about consciousness. They inhabit the fragile space between dreams and waking, solitude and connection, destruction and renewal. Through painting, Vyloor gives form to an unsettled inner world, revealing the artist’s existence as an ongoing search for identity, meaning, and a language that can speak from within. by @manojvyloor
