Spending this summer in nature with new friends at @air_byrdcliffe nurtured my creative practice and soul in ways I felt throughout my time there and expect to carry as I return to nyc life.

The Whitehead family established Byrdcliffe 124 years ago with a belief in the spiritual importance of art & in response to the dehumanizing effects of industrialization. The place they created—where people who cared deeply about their craft could live and work together—endures today as America’s oldest arts colony. This continuity, even through many of our country’s darkest moments, re-energized me immensely. Somewhere between the life-stifling machinery of today and true utopian society, you end up with a beautiful, sometimes buggy, place like Byrdcliffe & it will always have my heart💚

Join us Saturday July 18th for our next Open Studio day! 🐦‍⬛ 🧡

With map in hand meet the artists from Session 2 in their studios, visit our pop-up exhibition space to see more work from Communal and Cottage Resident Artists, and stick around after 4 for a musical and literary showcase from our talented Literary and Performing Artists!

Come early at noon for a tour of our founder’s historic home, White Pines, led by our historian (drive up to 454 Upper Byrdcliffe Road if interested)

For a map of participating Artists, performer lineup, and studio locations head to the Villetta Inn (3 Upper Byrdcliffe Way)

Detail from last painting, then journal of photos, sketches, thoughts from past weeks.
Journaling tends more visual or more verbal, just depending on which part of brain being the bigger pick-me of the day!
I dont want to record myself painting but sketches and photos feel like little timestamps or snapshots of process. And affinitizing fragments of consciousness facilitates the process too. by @manon.eaves

Was thinking it’d occur to me how to memorialize this residency experience at some point… but 367 days later here we are.. still hoping Fay, Ruby, Loy will capture this thus poignantly in a film one day. Was pretty much a bunch of angels frolicking around (except when it wasn’t lol). I miss everyone in these pics terribly and Patrick posing for Carly painting Caela will forever be the pinnacle of humor as far as I’m concerned.
