[EXHIBITION]

Delighted to be part of the group exhibition “La mer jamais ne s’oublie” @leschampslibres.
With the photographic-sculptures from 𝑀𝑒́𝑚𝑜𝑖𝑟𝑒 𝑆𝑎𝑢𝑣𝑒́𝑒 𝑑𝑒 𝑙’𝐸𝑎𝑢, I focuse on highlighting the role of industrial fishing in the collapse of benthic biodiversity (that is, the biodiversity of species living on the seabed). Deep-sea dredging effectively acts like a vast ploughing operation, repeatedly churning and stirring up the sandy or muddy layers. This dystopian tale imagines these species—torn away, broken, crushed or discarded—finding their final resting place beneath a layer of sediment, thus escaping immediate decomposition. Far from human eyes, in the dark depths of the oceans, molecular transformations would take place over the centuries; the organic remains would fossilise, becoming the last witnesses to a little-known biodiversity, yet one that is essential to the balance of ecosystems.
Scattered throughout the exhibition space as if at an archaeological dig site, these fake fossils alert us to this impending doom, made possible by our collective inaction.
Faced with the threat of a world in ruins, the film 𝐿𝑎 𝑀𝑒𝑟 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑒 embodies the need to affirm, for the future, that collective healing is possible. A woman – whom we imagine to be the last representative of humanity – throws stones into the sea, remnants of the vanished Living. As the stones hit the water, the inert seems to come to life again, forms metamorphose, and the sleeping sea awakens. Through this ritual, the woman attempts to give back to nature what has been torn from it, with the fragile hope of a rebirth. This repetitive gesture, both an act of rebellion and of care, transforms indignation into the power to act.

[OPENING/VERNISSAGE]

Last Tuesday opened the group exhibition “La mer jamais ne s’oublie” @leschampslibres , for which I am fortunate to be presenting two sections of a new body of work that advocates for recognition of industrial fishing’s role in the collapse of benthic biodiversity (organisms living on the ocean floor). What a joy it is to share this exhibition with the very talented @julie_bourges @marinelanier @juliettepavy , as well as the sublime work of Anita Conti, who has long been such an inspiring figure to me. Thank you, @ymguivarch , for choosing to showcase women’s perspectives on the sea and for placing your trust in me for this new project. A huge thank you to @candicearogers for agreeing to this extravagant set design and for her support in bringing it to life. Thank you to the whole team at Les Champs Libres and to Arthur Scatton and Adrien Beaumont for the lighting design. More images of the installation and info about the work are coming soon! by @manonlnjr

[BACKSTAGE ON GOING PRODUCTION]

This summer I was lucky enough to collaborate with @evbacchtt to set up experimental printing protocols for the pieces from my series 𝑀𝑒́𝑚𝑜𝑖𝑟𝑒 𝑆𝑎𝑢𝑣𝑒́𝑒 𝑑𝑒 𝑙 ’𝐸𝑎𝑢, 𝑙𝑒 𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑠 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑒 𝑙𝑎 𝑀𝑒𝑟. A work in which I imagine that the benthic species torn up by bottom trawling eventually fossilise as they become covered in sediment. A speculative narrative born out of three years of research with scientists, realised as cyanotypes bleached and toned with maritime pine on eco-designed concrete made from crushed oyster shells : 80,000 tonnes are incinerated every year in France, when they could be given a second life.
The pieces are still in production/finishing and will be exhibited alongside a new artist’s book at the @approcheparis fair in November.
Whilst waiting to present the works to you, here are a few behind-the-scenes photos of our research. by @manonlnjr

[BACKSTAGE FILM DEVELOPMENT]

A year ago, I was lucky enough to have a one-month residency at the Sémaphore at Pointe de Grouin. During this period, I was able to ask @nina.cholet , a filmmaker specialising in artisanal and eco-friendly film processing, to come and collaborate on developing the 15 rolls of film shot for the film. She kindly agreed to experiment with a plant I was keen to use: seaweed, and more specifically ‘goémon épave’ (all the seaweed washed up on the shore by the sea). The location where the film was shot (in Brittany) is covered in goémon along a whole section of its shoreline. Using this plant thus allows the film to be anchored, in a sense, to its filming location, but also to place it more broadly within a certain history of Brittany, where this seaweed has been harvested for several centuries for a variety of uses: fuel, fertiliser, livestock feed, food products, pharmaceuticals and industrial applications.
These practices, deeply rooted in the interaction between humans and living organisms, become the starting point for a reflection on the memory of marine ecosystems and the traces left by our actions. In order to embed the artistic act even more deeply within this reflection, and with a view to ensuring a clean and environmentally respectful production process, the chemicals usually required to develop film have been replaced by a concoction of seaweed from marine debris, fixed with seawater. By reducing the environmental impact of my work, this new technique lends a unique aesthetic to the images. Thus, this film – which focuses on the sea and was conceived with its conservation in mind – was created in close collaboration with the sea itself.
Thank again to Nina for making this possible, and also to @_charlotterimbaut and @gn_uum , my brilliant interns, who were able to assist her to some extent throughout the film development process. taken in Le Sémaphore De La Pointe Du Grouin by @manonlnjr

[BACKSTAGE SHOOTING]

A year ago, we were filming my experimental film 𝐿𝑎 𝑀𝑒𝑟 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑒 with the brilliant camera operator @jeremie_bole_du_chaumont & @thomaspringault . It was at a rather magical location in Brittany, which will remain a secret to best protect its fragile ecosystem. A lunar, seaside atmosphere for two days, during which my region gave us the very best it has to offer: a thousand sunny spells throughout the day, gusts strong enough to blow us away, and rain. Infinitely rewarding days spent with a fantastic team.
We filmed using my grandfather’s Super 8 camera and black-and-white film – 15 rolls that will yield 15 minutes of film, which you can currently see at Les Champs Libres in Rennes.

[BLUE MONDAY]

This Blue Monday, supposed to be the most depressing day of the year, is an opportunity for me to tell you a little more about my upcoming experimental film. As the sixth mass extinction is underway, the urgency felt by environmentalists since the 20th century in the face of ‘fatal extinction’ haunts me and inspires me to imagine a work that is both a memorial and an act of resistance. Faced with the prospect of a irradiated future or a world in ruins, we must resist despair by mobilising joy and the power to act through political action, symbolised here by a ritual of reconciliation between humans and the Living. The woman I’ll portray in my film 𝐿𝑎 𝑀𝑒𝑟 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑒 collects fossils and throws them into the sea, in a gesture of both rebellion and care, in the hope of reseeding the ocean.

The algae development tests carried out thanks to the knowledge and technique of @nina.cholet dye the film with an ochre veil which, once scanned and turned into a positive, takes on a subtle blue hue, like a breath or a memory of the sea. by @manonlnjr

[RETROSPECTIVE 2025]

In 2025, I became the mum of Iroise, an immense, indescribable joy that has given all my past and future projects new perspective.
This personal experience drives me and reinforces my choice to fight for the preservation of Living Things, to anchor my sensitive projects in a rediscovery of our relationship with them. A slightly calmer year, complicated too in terms of finding a new balance, but not without news ;)
Tara « la grande expédition » @104paris , « Territoires Mouvants » @fondationfrancoisschneider , Biennale Photo de Daegu “The Pulse of Life”, 8th Biennial of Architecture&Urbanism of Caen-Normandie, « Mers invisibles » @echo119_galerie @photobasel with @esther.woerdehoff and mostly a solo show at Musée Charles Nègres @museephotonice during l’UNOC the United Nations Conference on the Oceans where I had the chance to speak alongside Loïc Fel @coal_art.ecologie, Myriam Thomas @fondationtaraocean, @sylvain_lizon @villaarsonnice and @mareymann @tba_21 and @ln_guenin, and last but not least some nice press @libération @connaissancedesarts and a portrait in twist @arte

2026 will see the launch of a new three-part project combining experimental film, photographic sculpture, photography, scientific iconography and cross-disciplinary experimentation to explore the effects of anthropogenic stress linked to the industrialisation of fishing on marine ecosystems and question the place of humans in the chain of life. The first exhibition of this work will open in April @leschampslibres in Rennes. Stay tuned. by @manonlnjr
