Guillaume Grando
Surface And Depth #08301, 2026 — acrylic and resin on wood, 120 × 80 cm

Born in 1978 in Bagnolet, Guillaume Grando lives and works in Biarritz.
He's graduated from the École supérieure des métiers artistiques in Montpellier in 1997. His encounter in 2011 with Paul Lefèvre (Son of Cobra) introduced him to resin, a material that would become central to his work. Permanently settled in Biarritz since 2016, he has directed his research towards resin and pigments, where chance, gloss, reflection and depth compose a living matter, always in becoming — an abstract painting that reveals itself as much as it builds itself.

Born in 1994 in Kuwait, Alymamah Rashed's practice has taken shape as a complex system of correspondences and a sustained meditation on faith, femininity and the ecology of the self.
Nourished by the symbols of Islam, regional folklores and the sensory immediacy of the everyday, her visual language refuses any hierarchy between the sacred and the ordinary. The sacred is not elevated, but anchored — present in a fragment of soil, a murmur of water, a trace of gold leaf.

« Derrière son nom gravé dans la pierre, la Villa Mathilde s’ouvre comme un passage. »

Née de la rencontre entre Manon Sailly, galeriste parisienne, et Mathieu Chavaren, artiste peintre biarrot, la Villa investit une ancienne épicerie où de larges baies vitrées ouvrent l’atelier sur le jardin. Ici, la création se nourrit de la lumière et de la présence presque mystique des terres à portée de main.

« Dès le départ, c’était une évidence. On s’est dit que les artistes allaient littéralement être traversés par le territoire, et pas seulement l’observer. »

La Villa propose un cadre où le rythme compte autant que le lieu. « Souvent, les artistes arrivent avec un projet très spécifique. Et finalement, le temps et le silence les rapprochent de quelque chose de beaucoup plus intime. Cela devient un espace de réflexion, d’expérimentation. »

Entre deux résidences, la Villa Mathilde garde l’allure simple d’un lieu habité, où l’art se mêle au quotidien.

The title stands as a dual reference: to the original subjects (les rayons du supermarché — supermarket shelves) and simultaneously to the optical effect produced by the process of abstraction (les rayons de lumière — beams of light). The chromatic register of big-box retailers — blue, purple, pink, red, orange — is redeployed to critique their marketing strategies.

These colorful, non-figurative compositions, with their evanescent finish, invite a double contemplation: one that can ironically give rise to a hypnotic process similar to the visual manipulations exerted over supermarket customers, and at the same time make possible a patient and unproductive meditation through which the viewer can exit from the temporalities of consumption.

The fleeting horizon lines of the series ultimately promote a spiritual reading that echoes the discourses of Kandinsky, Rothko, Newman — painters for whom abstraction offered access to the metaphysical.

Congratulations to my dear friend Alia Zaal on the opening of In Plain Sight, her new solo exhibition at Gallery Isabelle. 🤍

An exhibition of paintings on canvas, paper, and ceramic tiles capturing intimate fragments of landscapes beloved by the artist — the plants and flora of the scrublands of Khawaneej in Dubai, and the mangroves and mudflats of Abu Dhabi’s coastline. Works that speak of memory and lived experience, far from romantic or spectacular landscape depictions. Pieces like Ghaf Memory in Biarritz and Al Shelaylah Light (2026) offer a subjective, enigmatic reading of the landscape.

Cap sur la Villa Mathilde : nous avons accueilli l’artiste Alia Zaal en résidence pendant deux mois, en mars et avril.

Basée entre Abu Dhabi et Dubaï, Alia Zaal explore la mémoire, la perception et la charge émotionnelle des images. Sa pratique navigue entre peinture et photographie : elle part souvent d’une photographie — d’archives ou personnelle — qu’elle retravaille par couches et répétitions, jusqu’à ce qu’elle devienne un fragment de mémoire plutôt qu’une image fixe.
