What screens + sitting are doing to our bodies

POSTS STORIES REELS

In 2023, I set out to answer a pretty simple question: What happens to our bodies — and our health — when we spend so much time sitting and staring at screens?

That question led to a research study with @columbia Medical Center and the @npr #BodyElectric podcast.

And eventually, to this: my new @ted Talk is out!! 🥳🥳

The headline? You don’t need a full lifestyle overhaul.
You need 5-minute breaks, regularly.

Five-minute movement breaks — a walk around the block, dancing at your desk — can boost energy, sharpen focus and lower your risk of chronic disease.

This research also lives inside my new book, Body Electric from @flatiron_books, coming out on May 5 (still wild to type).

Ready to curl up on the couch after a long day of zoom calls, too many open tabs and constant overload?

I get it. And you totally should wind down however you need!

And if you this is how you feel every day, you may want to consider taking some regular movement breaks throughout your day.

The science shows it can make you feel less fatigued and more energized… especially for the screen-free moments of life.

I go into this and more in my new book, Body Electric. Order wherever you get your books. by @manoushz

Yes, I’m a little out of breath. That’s what a brain-boosting walk sounds like.

Neuroscientist @wendy.suzuki says just 45 minutes of brisk walking (2–3 times a week) can protect the parts of your brain most vulnerable to decline.

Even one walk? Sharpens your focus for two hours.

The fact that I sound winded means it’s working. So put down your phone and go take a walk. by @manoushz

Reducing stress could reverse some of your gray hair.

This is your sign to take a stretch break. 🙆‍♀️

In this clip from @livelong_media’s Women’s Health Summit, @readthepersistent’s Editor-in-Chief @francesca.donner and journalist @manoushz discuss the benefits of integrating movement into your routine. And no, that doesn’t mean making your workout longer. by @manoushz

Could not be more excited September is OVER. 🫠 a little photo dump from the month:

At the @livelong_media Women’s Health Summit learning about a mammogram machine that does not require painfully smushing your boobs into pancakes. Progress.

If there’s no photo of the photo being taken for instagram, did it even happen? Me and @mrbeast.

My daughter’s new high school has a no-phone policy and her phone is now spending the semester in one of these little boxes.

Me at the UN, thinking about the increasingly fascinating partnerships between big foundations and content creators.

Finally bought weights. My perimenopausal ass has been informed that strength training is necessary.

Can we find ways to address climate change that also make us happier?

Not every day you get to have lunch with @mrbeast and talk about… lunch. 😄

I hosted a conversation at UNGA today with the @worldfoodprogramme and Rockefeller Foundation (@rockefellerfdn) about school meals — and how we get more people to understand why they matter.

Because a school meal isn’t just lunch. It can help keep a kid in school, support local farmers and strengthen entire communities. 💪

And Beast Philanthropy is working with Rockefeller to bring those stories to an audience that might never encounter them otherwise.

Turns out YouTube can be part of the global development infrastructure too. by @manoushz

Stressed? I am 🙋🏻‍♀️

So much so that I had to get a root canal! And while I was there, just listening of course their hands were in ny mouth, my doctor said more and more people have been grinding their teeth due to higher levels of stress.

I get it — AI, politics, back to school, floods and heatwaves — the list is endless! But if you can take a deep breath, unclench your jaw — you might just feel a little better.

And if not, go for a walk. 😂 by @manoushz

How many hours have you spent sitting in front of a screen today? 👀

Our increasingly tech-centric lives may be convenient, but our bodies weren't designed to stay still for hours on end. At #AspenIdeasHealth, "Body Electric" author Manoush Zomorodi ( @manoushz) explained the hidden health costs of the digital age and why taking movement breaks (even just five minutes per hour) matter more than you might think.
