I was one of the lucky folks to get a NOTADUĢˆMBLEĢˆ with the original PCB layout before they stopped production and changed it to the correct one. I hadnā€™t had a chance to put it together til today but I felt like it would be fun to time lapse the whole process. Took like 20 minutes or so to build. The new track from The Sundering is a special track for me. The intro riff came to me while I was driving with Elaina in Iceland, and while it was bouncing around in my head I knew I needed to record it ASAP so I had Elaina help me record a voice memo to capture it. A few weeks later laid down the demo, and I kept grinning because I was beyond excited about this track. I feel like I really found my voice for this project with this song. This was the track that I sent to potential band mates and friends because I was so proud of it. When it came time to actually begin recording this song it felt like I was having a difficult birth. This song is 7 minutes long and has approximately 40(!) different tracks on it. In my limited recording experience, this was a mountain for me to climb. I was up for the challenge. Once we got closer to the end, I genuinely felt like I was going crazy. Spending weeks on end immediately after work until I went to bed tweaking minor things and finding balance, test, retest, adjust, test, retest ad nauseam. During the final two weeks working on this track I most gave up entirely, but with the support of Elaina and my bandmates we made it through to the end, and you can hear it now. I am proud of this song, and I am grateful that I have a platform to share it and people around me who support me and love me. Today marks the release of the first track Iā€™ve written and produced thatā€™s ever seen the light of dayā€”and itā€™s a deathcore track! Itā€™s been a long road to get here. Iā€™m reminded of the first time I performed: I was 7 or 8, singing ā€œThis Is My Fatherā€™s Worldā€ with my dad at church. I was mostly annoyed I had to practice instead of play PokeĢmon, but I had no idea how important that moment would be. At 16, I played my first deathcore show with my first band, Smarter Than the Average Bear. I loved it so much I started two more bands. Looking back at the bands we opened for, some now considered legends, itā€™s wild to think that happened in high school. Later in high school, I became a christian and joined the church band, playing 2ā€“3 times a week. Under the influence of my mentors, I condemned metal altogether, even preaching a sermon about how ā€œit is the devilā€™s music and god wouldnā€™t consider it praise.ā€ How times have changed. Eventually, I realized I didnā€™t believe that sermon. I started a metal band in Bible college and we won a battle of the bands (yes, thereā€™s video somewhere on FB). Life moved on. I met Elaina, got married, and often shared with her about my metal days. She was always supportive even though metal wasnā€™t her thing. Since I started producing at home, sheā€™s been incredibly encouraging (even through endless loops of the same 15 seconds of a track). Her belief in me and my musical ability keeps me going. In August 2023, my dear friend and collaborator Roger sent me a one minute demo. That demo led to what is now The Sundering. Huge thanks to him for his friendship, creative energy and willingness to say yes. Thanks also to Joey, Kevin, and Adam for joining and elevating this project with their creativity and talent. And to SeĢamus and Dave, who demystified production and inspire me to keep creating. This is just the beginning. Thereā€™s so much more coming soon for The Sundering by @mansohof
