@manuel.lopez.r’s Tuki is a type design project aimed at supporting the writing of Mixe languages. It constitutes the first typeface family to incorporate glyphs from the Epi-Olmec, considered one of the earliest scripts in the Americas. Tuki is grounded in extensive linguistic, historical, and documentary research focused on reinterpreting a writing system that had fallen out of use. Today, this system is being reappropriated by the Mixe people as part of broader efforts to reclaim and sustain their cultural and historical heritage, making it clear that writing in the region existed prior to the adoption of the Latin alphabet.

😀Tuki Glifos, seleccionada en la X Bienal de Tipografía Latinoamericana Tipos Latinos.

Tuki Glifos forma parte de una familia amplia, destinada a la escritura de la lengua mixe. Es la primera fuente en incorporar los glifos de la escritura epiolmeca: un sistema silábico y logográfico que probablemente constituye el registro escrito más antiguo del continente americano.
Tuki reúne 68 glifos silábicos, 91 logogramas y 20 numerales documentados en dos piezas arqueológicas: la Estela de La Mojarra y la Estatuilla de Tuxtla.
Incluye además un conjunto de numerales de la “Cuenta Larga”: un sistema vigesimal empleado por varios pueblos mesoamericanos.
Cuenta con funciones OpenType para la sustitución de símbolos y permite el modo de escritura vertical. La digitalización y reinterpretación de estos símbolos forman parte de un proyecto que busca traer este antiguo sistema de escritura al presente y recuperar parte del patrimonio cultural de los pueblos originarios, cuya historia escrita comienza mucho antes de la adopción del alfabeto latino. by @manuel.lopez.r

What inspires a typeface like Gorgias?
A 1911 German edition of Plato’s #Gorgias, found in a Coyoacán bookstore, sparked the journey — but the story doesn’t end there.

Manuel López Rocha en Tipos Latinos!

📸 Compartimos registros de la presentación de @manuel.lopez.r en @tiposlatinos_ar, realizada en @faduunl. En su charla, Manuel presentó Gorgias, una tipografía cuyo punto de partida fue un pequeño libro sobre el diálogo Gorgias de Platón. Esa chispa inicial se transformó en una reflexión sobre la presencia de lo gótico en la cultura visual mexicana, donde aparecen resonancias en rótulos, signos comerciales y lettering popular. A partir de esta exploración, Manuel se preguntó: ¿es posible diseñar una gótica mexicana pensada para texto? Con Gorgias, esa pregunta encuentra una respuesta tipográfica sensible y contemporánea.

En PampaType celebramos este cruce entre filosofía, cultura popular y diseño tipográfico, y agradecemos a @librerialetra.e y @mnr.fadu por hacer posible este espacio de intercambio. ✨
