POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I remember having a dream in the weeks before 9/11 that more or less followed, in a dreamlike way, the events of the day. I’ve heard over the years that others had had a similar dream prior to 9/11 as well.

It was fashion week, and the night before I was at a launch of a new magazine.

Walking to work from the East Village on the morning of 9/11, I could see smoke above tenement rooftops. I assumed it was a building fire.

On Broadway, I saw police cars racing downtown. There was an abandoned car with its doors open blasting the radio, with someone calling on all on-duty officers to report to the World Trade Center immediately. There were crowds of people walking uptown.

Somewhere along Prince there was another abandoned car with the radio on at full volume. The Pentagon had been attacked. Two women were running past, stopped when they heard the news, looked at each other in disbelief without saying anything, and then continued running.

I turned a corner at Prince and W. Broadway and only then understood what was happening. One tower had already fallen, but it didn’t register to me that it was gone. The other tower was in flames.

I got to work (in the hazard zone) and the CNN homepage was just a basic html page with a logo, an image of the towers in flames, and some bullets.

A coworker came into the office from the hallway, where there was a window that faced south. She said “World Trade Center no more”, crossing her arms in an X.

I got on a bus near Houston that wasn’t following a particular route, just North. It stopped to pick up anybody who wanted a ride.

Bodegas put their TV sets on sidewalks around which many people gathered.

At that time, when you’d go out or go to a party, at least one person would have a nervous breakdown and end up in tears.

There were military vehicles all along Houston.

Flyers and posters for missing people were everywhere.

Mainstream outlets in the first couple of weeks would show images of people visibly trapped in the towers or jumping to their deaths. Those images faded, except for a few that got iconicized. Without irony, Jeff Buckley’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah became 9/11’s soundtrack. by @manuelsmiranda

Slip inside the eye of your mind

A better place to play?

Stoked that this publication we designed was honored by @aigadesign 50 Books / 50 Covers!

"The Innovative Urban Workplace: Designing for the Future at the Brooklyn Navy Yard" was designed for @yalearchitecture and documents the Edward P. Bass Visiting Distinguished Architecture Fellowship studio run by Abby Hamlin, founder of Hamlin Ventures, Dana Tang, architect and partner at Gluckman Tang Architects @gluckmantang, and Andrei Harwell @andrei__simon, critic in architecture at Yale. The publication was edited by @nina_rappaport and Stella Xu.

Responding to the Brooklyn Army Terminal's history of industrial manufacturing, we created a custom typeface based on industrial forms (particularly metal punches). The baseline was offset vertically to mimic both industrial motions and workers' gestures operating machinery in factories. Designed by Manuel Miranda and Fred Pirlot @fredomfries #aiga5050 taken in Brooklyn Navy Yard by @manuelsmiranda
