Having travelled through both the Brazilian and Colombian Amazon, I have often been struck by how easily the forest can appear timeless — vast, continuous, and seemingly untouched. Recent archaeological research presents a far more complex picture.

A 2026 study published in Nature estimates that parts of southwestern Amazonia may have supported between 1.25 and 3 million people around AD 100–300, alongside more than 20,000 human-made earthworks. These findings add to growing evidence that some regions of the Amazon were shaped by dense networks of communities, long-term settlement and landscape management.

What I find especially compelling is the way different scales of time seem to coexist there. Some insects live only days, animals for decades, trees for centuries, while archaeological remains preserve traces of people who lived there thousands of years ago. Each follows its own rhythm, yet all occupy the same landscape.

In many Indigenous Amazonian traditions, that landscape is also understood as more than a physical environment. Human, animal, plant and spiritual worlds are deeply interconnected, though these beliefs differ greatly between peoples.

Perhaps that is what has stayed with me most from being there, the sense that the forest contains many temporalities at once. The past is not entirely separate from the living landscape around it; both remain present, changing at different speeds. by @maoh.tikal

Introducing: Maōh

Details about Maōh’s identity remain unknown. What remains is the sound: a physical and ritualistic form of techno shaped by tribal percussion, repetition and instinctive movement. His work occupies a space between the ancient and the contemporary, driven by pulse, tension and collective motion. The result is a language that feels both primal and precise.
